I have been here both when the old decor was there and now fully refurbished decor. I think they have done a great job. Not a spot of chrome anywhere. They have managed to still keep the minimal decor and moody lighting but have improved the layout of the bar with more space and seating.
I have yet to eat here but would be interested to know what they do food wise as 99 Hanover is a great break from the mundane bars that all look and feel the same on George Street.

I went to 99 Hanover the other night for dinner with a friend. I had never been there before but after reading the reviews on edinburghmenus I was pretty excited.
I love love the decor. The high ceilings are intricately carved and the chandeliers really lovely. The seating in the back is open but intimate and the tables and chairs are some of the most interesting I have seen in town.
The place is known for their drinks and after catching a glimpse of my friend's passion fruit concoction I needed a turn at the cocktails menu. I went for a ginger beer and mint cocktail, I cant recall what was in it but I do remember thoroughly enjoying it.
Moving onto the food, I started with calamari and my friend ordered the veggie tempora. My calamari was served with a wasabi mayo that did not taste of wasabi at all but this was ok as the calamari was spiked with so much black pepper. Hot indeed. My friend's tempora was nicely cooked but lacking seasoning. It was served with sweet chili sauce. Is anyone as sick of this stuff as I am?
For mains my friend ordered the mussels in a tomato and bacon sauce and I had a steak with fries and mushrooms. The sauce on the mussels was so thick that the bread it was served with could not even mop it up as it should. The taste was "ok" nothing special as reported by my dining partner. My steak also lacked in the taste department but i was glad that it was served with french fries which were salty and delicious.
For dessert we shared the brownie served with ice cream. Its a bit sad when the bought in ice cream outshines the baked in house brownie which was the case here. The brownie was lacking that gooeyness that they should have. It was tasty but not the best.
I returned to 99 for drinks a few nights later and witnessed one of the best barman I have seen in the city. He was fast, courteous, and what a memory! Would definitely return for drinks but would visit another place for food.

I have been to 99 Hanover Street many a time for cocktails/drinks and I really like their rustic style and unique interior. They often have cool DJs playing and the bar has a great atmosphere. I have wanted to try their food menu for a while so I booked a table via the Edinburgh menus online system – I couldn’t believe how easy it was to use and will definitely use this system more often in the future.
The food menu is slightly basic – 99 is definitely more of a drinking establishment than a restaurant but, nevertheless, we had a very nice meal. I plumped for the special which was a pea, salmon and mint risotto and my friend went for the fettuccini.
When our mains arrived I was surprised at how big the portions were – I had to leave half of mine because it was so filling; I have a huge appetite so for me to leave anything on the plate is a rare occurrence. The addition to the mint in my risotto was a great idea – it made an ordinary dish tasty with a unique flavour. My friend’s fettuccini looked a little bland but she assured me that it was nice also. Service was also good - our waitress was friendly and efficient.
Our bill came to £26 for two mains, a portion of fries and two glasses of wine – very reasonable considering 99’s location.
I am swithering whether to give 99 a 3 or a 3.5 for its food but going to plump for 3.5 for its funky decor, good food, reasonable prices and good looking bar staff (!)

I'm torn between giving this place a good review and keeping it to myself. I had a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon here yesterday. Sitting in a comfy chair, enjoying decent guinness, good service and a top quality burger and fries for £8.50.
Cocktails for my other half weren't cheap but were tasty and when they ran out of passion fruit for one they suggested their own mix which was tried and enjoyed. Good bar staff.
Service was a tad slow but we did order at 4.30 on a Sunday and we weren't in a hurry.
The decor was lovely. it reminded me of somewhere French or even french-moroccon. Music was decent too - someone lobbed on Massive Attack; protection for our last hour there.
All in all a top chilled out Sunday afternoon joint. I mean... rubbish, don't go there.. ... honest...

I was in with my friend yesterday and thought the service was excellent and enjoyed the food . I would recommend this bar to other friends as it is so relaxed and a bit different from the bars in George Street (more relaxed) and the food was reasonably priced too.

Contrary to other reviewers, I entirely disagree. A member of the bar staff was VERY rude, believed he was better than anyone he may be serving! We visited evening of Sunday 27th July, will not go back as being spoken to like that by someone is unacceptable. Awful attitude, very offended. Surroundings are pleasant enough, but don't compensate for being spoken to in the way we were. A bad apple, but unfortunately does not alter opinions. Sort your staff out.

My favourite bar anywhere near George St. A lot of character thanks to it's minimalist decor, moody lighting and 80s cartoons playing on a screen.
It's currently being renovated; meaning it's destined to be another chrome filled, rubbish style bar. I'm putting £10 on that if the bookies take such bets.
