A simply fantastic neighbourhood Indian restaurant

4.5

You might expect an Indian restaurant and takeaway on St John's Road in Costorphine to be a run-of-the-mill, uninspiring Chicken Korma and Rogan Josh kind of establishment. But that is not the case at all. This fairly new restaurant has been fitted out immaculately belying its somewhat unglamourous location. The decor is bright, clean and modern and this attention to detail continues right down to the contemporary Wedgwood crockery and cutlery.

Thankfully the good first impression wasn't shattered when the food arrived. We opted for chicken pakora and mixed kebab to start - classic Indian starters that were well executed and very satisfying. For mains, we steered clear of the classic British Indian mains (that are still on the menu to placate the unadventurous diner), and opted for a couple of the more interesting sounding dishes.

We went for two lamb dishes, Hyperabadi Massalla Gosth and Kaboli Chana Gosth. The menu usefully suggests side dishes that would compliment each main. Both were dishes and their accompanying sides were fantastic and, quite frankly, we failed to find fault with either. If we must, then perhaps the accompanying garlic naan was slightly overcooked.

The cost of the meal was as you would expect for a good quality Indian meal in Edinburgh. If you think you might save a little money by travelling slightly out of the centre for your Indian, you may be disappointed, but the quality of the food, the surroundings and friendly and attentive service make it worthwhile.

So what more could you ask for from a neighbourhood Indian restaurant? Cobra beer on tap, perhaps? They have that as well.

Very highly recommended.

I visited on the 24th with 3 of my friends. I booked for a table 1 week ago but when I arrived in the restaurant me and my friends had to wait 30 minutes. The food was not very good, the service was slow.

It's the first and last time I go there!

This restaurant has not long opened (almost three weeks). Partner and I called in just after nine pm on Monday for a takeaway. We were told by (I presume the manager in charge) that they have been really busy since opening.

We ordered a mixed tandoori grill (my partner's choice) a rogan josh and a pilau rice. We waited approx 15 minutes for our order which cost a total of £20.40.

The food I'm sorry to say wasn't very good. My partner complained that the meat was tough and greasy. My rogan josh was bland and contained whole slices of garlic which I found slighty off putting. The portion sizes were good. Naan bread and rice were okay.

Be warned the interior of this restaurant is extremely bright and garish. It's got what I think is an eye looking down from the ceiling decorated with lights. The restaurant has a luminous green lighting effect over it and the floors are lit up too. I think it would be rather diifficult to actually see what you are eating and wondered if it had the effect of making the food look green! At the back of the restaurant is a special room for larger/private parties with a massive flat screen televsion. Would any party wish to watch TV whilst out socialising? It looks like Roddy from changing rooms has been let loose on it.

It was our first visit there and we will not return.

We looked forward to trying this new place as we live near Corstorphine and we both feel, we are tired of the usual retaurants in this part of town none of them worth a special mention.

We visited this newly opend restaurant on 27th February. We had king prawn Rezzala and chicken Biryani, both dishes were very very tasty. Peshawari naan was a excellent. My point of view decor is good. Restaurant was packed. Although service was bit slow, but food was good. We will use it again and again.

Being regular customers we have become more and more disappointed with Abida. The food is usually good but after sending one dish back (the only time in approx 15 visits) the staff were not sympathetic or apologetic that a young child had been served a very spicy korma! One waiter in particular is obviously against children. On 3 occasions he has refused to allow a buggy with a sleeping child in claiming it's fully booked with no room despite it being very quiet at lunchtimes. Each time we have insisted we have timed it so we can eat in peace and each time the restaurant has NEVER been fully booked. We won't ask again and will instead go elsewhere.

My partner and I tried to phone to book a table for a Saturday night - we could not get through. It was quite early so we jumped in a taxi and popped along to the restaurant. Inside; there were lots of large tables maybe for 8 or 10. There were quite a few diners and lots of empty seats remaining. We were quickly attended to, but were asked to come back at 9pm - 3 hours later! It seems the restaurant was being greedy hoping for large parties but not willing to cater for a couple. This put us off and we travelled to the other side of town for a great meal.

I visited Abida on 12th March with two of my friends. We booked ahead and turned up 10 mins late however were asked to wait in the seating area for 20 minutess before our table was ready. At no point during this time did they provide us with menus or ask us if we would like a drink.

However, once we were seated, the service was excellent and the waiters very friendly and attentive. The food was very good. My friends raved about their dishes, a vegetarian one and a king prawn massallam (with coconut in the sauce). I asked for a lamb dish but was served chicken. Rather than wait for the correct dish I decided to go ahead with the chicken one. It was very pleasant, not the best I've had but by no means the worst.

I think the function room with the TV looks really smart and I think having a girly night out there watching a girly film would be tremendous.

All in all it was a very pleasant evening and we will return.

Abida, 295a St John's Road, EH12 7XF, Edinburgh

The restaurant was wonderful and I had a brilliant time. On arrival at the restaurant on Tuesday, we were greeted by wonderful and pleasant staff. As we were seated at out table our waiter gived us a few moments to go over the menu. He made some good suggestions to us about what kind of food we would like. Very pleasant after choosing starters he made sure that we enjoyed it and gived us time to chose our main course. We will definitely be coming back and the food was amazing a real taste from the East. I would recommend - why go up to George Street when you have Abida?

Abida, 295a St John's Road, EH12 7XF, Edinburgh

Have visited many times and tried different dishes on most occasions. I admit the lighting is not to everyone's taste, but the food is superb, and have never had any problems with service.

This is coming from somebody who has tried many curry houses throughout the UK and overseas.

I do hope that they will do something different for the forthcoming curry week.

Abida is a lovely restaurant, amazing food which we have never been disappointed with. My husband and I went on Hogmanay 2009 for a meal together for something different and it was quite busy and had a nice atmosphere.

The "Party room" is for large groups of people who fancy something different with added privacy. It's great as they have karaoke!

Excellent place

This restaurant is amazing. Everything is perfectly cooked and tastes delicious. Me and my partner go here for anniversaries or just for a nice meal. Prices can be a little high but well worth it. Very romantic atmosphere and I would highly recommend to anyone.

Abida, 295a St John's Road, EH12 7XF, Edinburgh

Food was dry, chicken very dry and stringy. Service was not the best - Abida seems to have gone down hill of late. We were regular customers but after Saturday night we won't be back. After we complained about our food we were then ignored. £60 for a meal should be to a better standard than what it was. I don't recommend it.

Our takeaway delivery arrived 1.5 hours late. Food was cold when it arrived; chicken was cold. We called to complain and were accused of making excuses. Very very poor.

I visited on the 19th with four of my friends. It was very busy - we had to wait 5 minutes for a table, which was fine. The food was lovely. My friends were very pleased with the chicken jalfrezi, bhindi gosht and mushroom rice. I loved the decor and our waiter Michael was very friendly and most helpful. We will be returning!
