Amazing Thai, 232 Leith Walk, EH6 5EQ, Edinburgh

If this review was based on the first time I had food from Lan Thai, which was eaten in and not delivery, the place would have scored much higher. However, when I got delivery from them last night the food paled in comparison to my previous time there.

I had passed by Lan Thai many times and always saw people in there waiting for food or eating so my partner and I gave it a go. We got a grilled shrimp dish to start, chicken panang curry, rice and pad thai. The grilled shrimp was mouth firey hot, just like that dish should be. The curry was also very hot and for my tastes could have been a bit more mild. My partner went gaga for the pad thai. Having both been to Thailand and eaten a lot of thai food for some reason he still has unreal cravings for this noodle dish and we almost always order it. Most of the time however we are disappointed so we were very pleased when the dish arrived and looked and tasted like the real thing. Plenty of peanuts, crushed chilis, lime, bean sprouts with the rice noodles bathes in a somewhat tart tamarind scented sauce (not too saucy). All the accompaniments were there (no dried shrimp tho :( ) egg, pork, herbs, etc.

I was looking forward to the pad thai when we ordered for delivery last night but what arrived was hardly even an imitation of the dish we had previously. The noodles were bland, no hint of tamarind, very few peanuts and one measly lime wedge. The thom kha soup was very nice, strongly seasoned with lemongrass, lime leaves and coconut milk. We also ordered the thai style sweet and sour, which was certainly better than the chinese sweet and sours out there but nothing special. I will stick with the Thai Curries next time.

Was the not so good second experience due to the delivery? Is eat in better? I will definitely give Lan Thai another shot but it will certainly be an eat in experience.

I have had delivery from this place twice and it was equally excellent both times.

I probably wouldn't eat in because of the small area, but I was suprised another reviewer said they would ONLY eat in now due to a bad take out experience. Hopefully it was just a bad night as their massaman curries are divine (I like them mild and this is one place that actually do it mild for you if you ask, without losing flavour).

Ordered food online to be delivered, waited 2 hours before I went and got a burger instead. They don't answer their phone, which is really infuriating. So all in all possibly the worst dining experience possible (the burger from elsewhere was good though.)

I live in Aberdeen but anytime I go to Edinburgh I eat at the 'Lan Thai' restaurant. The lady is friendly and the food is good.

This is really among the best take out food you can get.

It is fresh, tasty and not expensive.

Service is good and the people are friendly.

The best Thai food I've had since being in Thailand. The penang chicken curry is awesome.

This was a truly awful food experience. To say that my chicken Pad Thai tasted like a combination of sewage and off fish would do an injustice to the latter. I've eaten Pad Thai in many restaurants and I am very accustomed to strong Thai flavours. If you have ever had the misfortune to put any food in your mouth that was prepared on these premises then all I can say is God help you!

Neither me or my girlfriend could eat more than one spoonful and felt ill for the whole night.

Always have lovely food from here. The lady who runs the establishment is extremely friendly and willing to suggest things. We love the food from here and recommend it to all our friends. Very fresh and tasty every time.

I'm actually astounded that this place has any positive reviews. A few nights ago I was too hungry to cook, as I'd been traveling for work and had only had a muffin. I took to Just Eat and ordered some chicken pad Thai, a massaman curry, and some spare ribs.

First, we didn't get the spicy crackers we were told we'd get if we spent more than £16. Next, the pad Thai tasted like lemon washing up liquid. The sauce on the massaman was so watery it was actually quite difficult to eat.

Like I say, I'd eaten nothing but a muffin all day but at 10pm my boyfriend and I barely made a dent in this food. Two words to describe: "rank" and "rotten".

It is primarily a take-away outlet, but it has got a couple of tables where you can sit and enjoy your meal on a plate, hot and fresh.

Yes it's small - but friendly.

The food is great and its good value.

The owner will suggest dishes if you are unsure.

Tried it first time in the passing - now make a point of popping in regularly!
