Amore Dogs, 104 Hanover Street, EH2 1DR, Edinburgh

I'm a fan of Amore Dogs' older brother, The Dogs, upstairs from this new Italian venture on Hanover Street so was looking forward to trying this.

There are a lot of similarities between the two restaurants - most importantly a very friendly, informal atmosphere and reasonable prices. Several of the main courses are also designed to be shared between 2 people, as in The Dogs. On my visit I shared the Sea Bream main with someone and it was really good. There was too much food for us to finish it all which I don't often find with fish courses (we'd had starters too).

A couple of minor niggles. The tables are too small. Four of us were a bit cramped around a small square table that would have been more suitable for four people in a cafe, not a restaurant where you need space for wine, water, side dishes etc. In fact, we had to put our wine and water on an adjacent table as we didn't have enough space. Luckily the restaurant was quiet. Also, I know that the whole "Do you mind keeping your cutlery for the main course" thing adds to the informal atmosphere of the place, but really - just bring me some clean ones will you?

I'd go back as it's reasonable and the food and service is good which are the most important things to me.

Like Andy, I am a large fan of the Dogs (original). I've been there several times and would consider myself a disciple. The general gist here is that there's a bit more funky not-necessarily-core=british meals on the menu. Bit more italian. mediteranean type dishes. There's lots of mention of lentils, the bread comes with olive oil instead of butter and a wider variety of fish.

There were 10 of us the night we went. The service was largely fine. I think if you asked for a clean knife and fork you would get it without too much fuss. I myself had bruschetta (very tasty) followed by pigeon which was odd and strangely tasted like you'd expect a pigeon to taste. Pigeony. I enjoyed it but wouldn't say it was for everyone. Generally everyone was happy enough with their meal. The suggested wine was great mind you. I wouldn't say we were collectively amazed. It was a reunion meal so we had loads to talk about so the food was almost secondary.

Good value for money, nice atmosphere, tables could have been a bit bigger indeed, I'd go again but probably stick with the original first.

Amore Dogs, 104 Hanover Street, EH2 1DR, Edinburgh

Visited Amore Dogs with a party of ten so had the privilege of trying quite a lot of the menu. Whereas its sister restaurant, The Dogs, has always been reliably excellent, Amore was a bit of a mixed bag. Firstly, staff and service was excellent - no problem at all: quick and friendly. I had ox liver to start, breaded in polenta with a vinigary tomato chutney. This wasnt good - apart from the poor frying, the flavours of the dish were harsh and unevenly balanced and a large green core of tomato was off-puttingly present in the chutney. Out of the other starters I tried a mackarel salad (good), cheesy garlic bread (good, if a little greasy) and gnocci (v. good). Mains were an improvement - the pizzas were all pretty tasty, apart from an ill-conceived 'BLT' one. My braised pork cheeks, stuffed trotter and lentils was nice, but not terribly exciting and was a bit short on trotter. The pasta dishes were good, a rigatoni al amatriciana particularly so. Steak had terrific charred flavour and was well cooked, but the mash it came with was over-seasoned. Tiramisu was nice if nothing special. Overall a bit of a mixed bag, but generally nice. I would go back as the menu is far more interesting than some italians. Also, for ten of us drinking (sharing starters and a couple of desserts) it was only £179, which is actually ridiculously cheap. Definately recommend, but not as much as the Dogs.

This restaurant started off well but has now gone into decline. Maybe the chef has left but the food is now awful and the service slow - the kitchen's fault not the serving staff.

Had the misfortune to eat here recently and it was dreadful. In a party of ten, three dishes were inedible (one of the pasta dishes drenched in olive oil and pesto) and I foolishly eat half of a seafood dish that left me in a terrible state the following day. Two others of our party suffered badly the day after too.

I'd recommend you avoid at all costs, there are plenty of good restaurants to choose from in the near vicinity.

We had a leaving do here on the basis of a recommendation. A party of 12 of us meant they were unable to give us the full menu - a restricted menu was provided with an extremely odd choice of main courses - pigeon; fish (yes it only said fish not which type) and parsley and mushroom risotto. Everything was too much hassle. I felt extremely intimidated by the waiter who I believe may have also been the owner. As you can imagine the main courses did not inspire everyone and when we asked for additional choices we were offered a cheese and tomato or salami pizza or pasta. When someone asked what types of pasta were available they were asked in a very indignant way - what do you want? Scarily the pasta that some of us did chose was under cooked and barely edible. The Mushroom Risotto was radioactive green in colour and had massive chunks of mushroom in it. Service was also poor with us having to ask for a pepper grinder and fresh grated parmesan and they bought a small ramekin for 12 of us - we asked for more on 2 further occasions. Overall an extremely poor experience and I will never step food inside this restaurant again or recommend it to anyone.

I have had the mis-fortune of eating at both Amore Dogs and at The Dogs. After suffering from food poisoning at The Dogs a few years ago I was willing to give Amore Dogs a chance. However yet again I got food poisoning - both times I had a risotto based dish. I found the staff at Amore Dogs extremely unhelpful had a bad attitude to say the least! I won't be returning to either restaurant and would recommend giving them both a miss.

Agree with Bella, yesterday was the second time to Amore Dogs for us and everything was as good as it was the first time.

Food arrived promptly, tasted great and as before just the right sized portions. I like the way the guys and ladies work in there, who cares about having your wine poured for you, we are not helpless we can lift and pour from a bottle. I never feel let down or disappointed and neither did anyone else sitting around us, the place was packed and people were being turned away. I later walked past places that should have been packed and sat half empty... on a Saturday after pay day. Get there, don't go with any preconceptions and you will have good food and good chat.

For Us it was...

Bread

Braised Chicken Leg on Sauteed Pesto Potatoes

Sundried tomato and goats cheese frittata pecorino, pear, walnuts and honey panna cotta with bitter chocolate

Bottle of pinot grigio.

I was recommended this place by a friend. I'd made the reservation 10 days in advance and looked like the staff were re-jigging the sitting plans to squeeze more people in. I was not impressed with our table near the bar/window. The staff keep on brushing past me and knocking my chair, along with a very loud table of 4 next to us. The service was very slow and chaotic, I ordered the baby octopus and chickpea broth - don't think many people had ordered it as it took 35 minutes to arrive. The table next to us placed their order at the same time and by the time we received our mains, they were paying for their 3 course meal. The food was very disappointing despite what The Times food critic claims (don't get the broth!!), we certainly won't be going back their in a hurry. There are plenty of better places in the area.

Can't believe some of these reviews! I found it superb on a Saturday night! Great value, very tasty, friendly service and considering it's City Centre as well! I'm going back two days later with friends!
