Food was lovely, however the place was empty and this was very obviously due to the service and standard of staff. There was only 1 girl working and she was highly patronising and rude to both me and my mother who were in Edinburgh on a holiday. Great shame as we'd been in a few days before and the service had been okay.
Don't go there unless you want to be insulted by a snotty waitress, trust in the fact that it is empty for a reason. x

I have always had good experiences here. They do good student deals on drinks and have always been friendly and helpful. It can be empty at times, but I have seen it very full at certain times which obviously means people do actually like it.

I think this is a great place to start from on a night out. Aspen is now under new management and things are a lot better service wise and they still do student discounts and the food is very good.

I really like Aspen. The new owners have really turned this place around. The food is of restaurant quality but at decent bar prices. The service is very relaxed and informal. This is good as you often get textbook and scripted service in most bars which I find a bit false and offputting.
The cocktails are great and I love the atmosphere.
An all round decent place to be in Edinburgh.
Go and find out for yourself.

I go to Aspen quite regularly, the food is great and the atmosphere is good too. During the day it is perfect for a quiet peaceful and very reasonably priced lunch and in the evening it's really buzzy and the cocktails are brilliant. The staff all seem really nice and the decor is lovely too, what more can you ask for?

Well, the food is average. The drinks are also average, not bad really. But for what you pay - even for folks who get student discounts - it is nothing very special.
My main problem was the staff and the ambiance. I mean, they have free internet access. So if you want to hear folk chatting with their families in (fill in the blank), speaking very loudly, then this is your place.
I mentioned this to the wait staff--and my friends and I had already bought more than 70 euros of food and drinks--and she did nothing. We left. I won't be going back. There are classier places in Edinburgh with the same quality (like The Villager, among many others) where one can do without the folks who just want to sit around for hours using the internet.

I was in Aspen for a friend's birthday. Biggest problem was the female staff including the so-called manager. The girl who served us was rude, patronising and obnoxious and definitely better suited for serving fries in McDonalds. When we asked to speak to the manager, she approached us very aggressively and instead of rectifying the problem defended her staff and blamed our behaviour. How that women could run a bar was beyond me. Only rectifying part was the male bartender was very polite and apologised for the incident and did make us some great cocktails. I would only go back if I knew that certain staff members were and weren't working.

I chose Aspen as my local throughout the festival. Before making my journey home, I'd like to thank the fine folk at Aspen for taking care of me so well. I found the staff and management to be nothing but pleasant, fun and helpful, particularly during an extremely busy time. The food was lovely and I felt they made a genuine effort to produce something fresh and original. I would recommend the jambalaya and the mojitos. I'll definitely be back next year. Thanks again!

I never post on review sites as they tend to be places where people who feel aggrieved post.
I must say I love Aspen. Given that it is a near City Centre bar the atmosphere is always relaxed and friendly. I have never found the staff to be anything other than helpful and cheerful. They always go above and beyond and they obviously do a good job given the welcome we always receive.
The food is tremendous value, the cocktails are excellent and the wine is really good value if you compare the price and quality of wines in other premises around.
It frustrates me when I read bad reviews like the 2 previously as the guys in Aspen are great and one of the main reasons I go regularly.

AVOID!!! The manager is an extremely obnoxious woman who doesn't really believe in customer service. Although the food is decent, for the price you pay you expect it to be presented well and if you do have a comment, you expect it to be addressed, but instead will probably be blamed. There's not much more to be said for this place, which was probably half-empty for a reason and will continue to be with this woman in charge.
