I've been here several times and it's mostly been great. One person I've brought there was disappointed... almost universally otherwise it's been well received. Pizza is good there and the helpings are nice. Vibrant atmosphere and good service. Been there for an xmas party and it was carnage -- good fun but very popular so booking may be necessary on some weekends. Good family spot - I've been there with my sister and her kids.

Bar Roma has attracted two contrasting reviews in recent weeks; one excellent, the other dreadful. The incongruity of the reviews is particularly surprising given that Bar Roma is a large independent restaurant, where the major draw for many people is the continuity of service, and the anticipation of getting something familiar, in warm pleasant surroundings.
The restaurant is an institution in Edinburgh, and along with the Giuliano’s and the Vittorias, absorbs a large proportion of the Capital’s Italian dining market. There is good reason for this. I have eaten in Bar Roma four or five times; as a member of a large party; with a date; and for business. Every visit was enjoyable, and there will surely be more.
The service is always good at Bar Roma, probably because it is overseen by the stunning blonde restaurateur, who seems to be a permanent fixture at the welcome desk. The food is to a consistent good standard, but is not outstanding. However, anyone who expects haute cuisine, in a restaurant that seats close to 200, is naïve. My food highlight was definitely the bruschetta.
The prices were typical of what one would expect of a city restaurant serving good food, with mains in the £10-20 region.
To conclude, Bar Roma is a good restaurant, definitely worth a visit. For those on a first date, or booking party, it is a great destination. The staff will make sure your visit is special, and are well capable of handling the larger groups. Those looking for excellent Italian fine dining should consider somewhere a little smaller, perhaps La Partenope, or D’Antonios.

This is a local restaurant for me as I work nearby. Regrettably like most restaurants in the West End it lacks quality, substance, ambiance and value for money. Emphasis here on the value for money, because these days 10% service charge as mandatory is frankly disgusting and simply replaces the "tip" element. Which is unfortunate. As like most I like to leave one based on how impressed I was with the experience. The dishes here are are blank canvass variety. In other words you could make better yourself for a third of the cost. Appallingly over priced pizza and gruesome pasta is the order of the day. Add to this, Sky's the limit drinks prices! Service is scant. The interior of the place is tacky to the extreme. The interior of A Roman villa before the barbarians hit it looks better now than this place does now. Do yourself a favour and stay away from this poor mans Italian food venue. It reeks.

This was my second time to Bar Roma within one month, both were with quite large groups of people. While I couldn't complain about the food I was not at all impressed with the service. I was very annoyed that after paying a bill of almost £900 with a 10% service charge, which I didn't really feel they deserved, that we were told immediately to leave as they were waiting on the table. I had done all the booking and at no time were we told we would have to leave the table by a certain time. I was very annoyed as some people still had full drinks and the impression given was - we got your money now get out! Won't be going back there and certainly wouldn't recommend it.

After eating Chinese food for the past 20 years, thought we would try Italian and went to the Bar Roma on passing. Food was absolutely gorgeous, staff very friendly and helpful. I can now honestly say that we will be eating Italian for the next 20 years at the Bar Roma as we have now had a few visits and it's been great all times. Many thanks to Antonio and Evan and the rest of Bar Roma staff for making us so welcome.

Saturday night so very busy. Very loud and crowded, studenty atmosphere. Drinks extortionate, cheapest bottle of wine £15 (house) most priced at over £22 per bottle for a mediocre offering. Service average, but we had a nice apologetic waiter when our wait for 2 pizzas took well over 35 minutes. Not worth the wait - very bland. Very disappointing experience. Felt slightly ripped off.

8 of us ate there recently and the service and the food were excellent. It was very busy but the staff really looked after us and it ended up being a great night out accompanied by some great food and wine.
