Bert's Bar, 29-31 William St, EH3 7NG, Edinburgh
I have been to Bert's Bar quite a few times now. Generally it has been during the week and it has been fairly quiet. It is an attractive "old man's" pub and is situated on the very picturesque William Street in the New Town. The ambiance is relaxed and nobody bothers you, or is particularly loud.
However I went last night (a Friday a couple of weeks before Xmas) and it was heaving. Our group had a drinks kitty and so we all ordered en masse. They have modern, electronic tills so it isn't hard to remember lots of drinks at once as you can simply enter them into the till system. Despite this, the barman was distinctly unfriendly and really couldn't be bothered to serve our drinks. This obviously beggars the question,"why is he a barman?".
I haven't eaten here so I cannot review the food - I believe it is lunch times only - but I can say that despite the grumpy barman I would recommend this pub during the week as an attractive place for a quiet drink. As for weekends, well I don't like noisy, crowded places however attractive they are so don't listen to me when I say don't go!
