I went to cafe rouge for Saturday lunch.

Staff were excellent, very friendly and attentative. The food was yummy and came quickly even though they were very busy!

The Merguez in my merguez salad was yummy and my friend had the goats salad which she assured me was delicious also.

It was a bit pricy for what it was - we shared a main as a starter, had 2 mains and 2 glasses of wine - it came to £34.

On the whole: good.

Long time no review. But here I go again!

Note: Scroll down to last sentence if you want to skip my usual rambling guff. Go on.

After just hanging around in my usual haunts (see previous reviews) and being unadventourous with my food choices, I was invited to try out the Cafe Rouge chain. Dare I pry myself away from the Petit Paris?

My oh my.. if Petit Paris is a small chain playing up it's grassroots... roots, Cafe Rouge is its larger, brassier, ballsier big sister with full on Moulin Rouge cosmopolitan French city glamour, mirrored surfaces, large ceilings, big and open. I was impressed. This was Grande Paris, and I half expected Le Metro to rumble past my feet. I guess the new Edinburgh tram system will have to do.

On with the food. The menu is a bit confusing but they apparently do everything from lunches to sarnies, baguettes to beers. A small french cafe that can do posh dinners. And posh dinners they can do, for reasonable prices.

Had the duck confit with orange liqeuer and square potato and garlic hash. Magnifique.

Last sentence: I will be coming back here again.

I do not recommend this restaurant.

I went here one sunny night after work for a couple of drinks and some dinner. The tables outside are crammed far too close together and everyone kept on stumbling over people's bags, legs... eventually we opted to go inside.

Service was bad. We had one extremely rude waiter who, after I had complained my food was cold, very rudely snatched them back to take back to the kitchen. On the way he mumbled something about me to a waitress standing nearby who proceeded to look over to our table. Very amateur, I was only complaining that my food was cold! Food was overall OK but over-priced.

We were never checked up on and it took us ages to even get hold of someone to bring us our bill.

Overall: rubbish service and an extremely average meal. I would not go back.

Not really worth the effort. It's okay for a lunchtime snack, but there is no reason to go out of your way to eat here.

What can I say? It's a chain, playing at being French...

The one thing in its favour is an excellent rosé from Provence. Look out for the Chateau d'Aumerade!

Normally very good however do not go when it is busy. The service collapses and the chef has a meltdown.

After waiting 1hr 20 mins for my main course we had to send both dishes back. The apology we received 'sorry you chose the hardest things on the menu to cook'.

For me this is something that should not be said unless it's Fawlty Towers.

In their credit, all the food was discounted and drinks were on the house.

I've been four or five times over as many years, and the service is, consistently, atrocious. You can expect to hang around waiting to catch the eye of a waiter for just about everything... Getting a seat, getting a drink, getting your food ordered, ordering the bill.

It's been like this for years, and I don't foresee it changing any time soon. You just have to ask yourself, why? Do none of the managers care? Are they actually instructing their staff to be like that? Sounds crazy, but I can't help thinking there's a bit of truth in it.

Rather tiny tables and quite close together, so not recommended for intimate romantic dinners. But for a quick lunch it is fine: good choice of food and reasonably priced. Can get pretty busy.

I've never experienced the bad service others have described - can be a little slow, but always polite.

Food not very good. Service is amateur - need education - staff manager must learn to say sorry to costumer. He never listened to my complaint. I will never be back.

Other people should not judge this nice restaurant with one visit only. We have been going to Cafe Rouge for the last 9 or 10 years (at least once a week for dinner or lunch and two or tree times for coffee) and so far never been disappointed. All the waiters have been there for a long time - they always call us by names! How wonderful is this?

Staff are always polite and food is to perfection. In Edinburgh you can not get any better restaurant then the Cafe Rouge. You don't like Cafe Rouge you dont have taste. Go on, give it a try!

I like the food - it is lovely and hot and good. And I like the service very much as well and the staff are very helpful.

Utterly awful, have eaten in here a number of times over the past year or so due to Tesco vouchers and to be honest if I had ever actually have had to pay myself for the meal I would have cried.

The service of the staff has to be the worst in Edinburgh. They are rude (even when on the phone booking a table), the food is sometimes barely edible and it is over-priced for the crap they serve up. I honestly hope I never ever in my life have to eat in this restaurant again as the service has to be the poorest in Edinburgh.
