We really wanted thai food. Ok, not entirely true. We really wanted to eat and Chiang Mai was there. Having been to Thailand and having been to some amazing Thai restaurants outside of the country I was pretty skeptical when we entered the restaurant. However upon entering the smell of thai spices, coconut milk, and stir frying were apparent and helped to raise my hope for a decent meal.
Overall we were not disappointed. My husband wasnt that hungry, or so he said before he devoured the entire meal, so we only ordered Pad Thai and panang curry with chicken and rice. I feel that rice should never cost extra but for some reason this is de regeour in Edinburgh and it is sad. Everywhere is like £2 for just steamed rice! Its really a shame.
Anyways, I always think a great test for Thai restaurants is the quality of the Pad Thai and one of the curries. The pad thai was not too saucy and not too dry, a good consistency. The prawn were a bit muddy tasting and that was a shame. The sauce was ok, could have used a lot more tang, more tamarind in the sauce but at the same tiome didnt make some typical mistakes of other places substituting a peanut sauce for the pad thai sauce.
The Panang was ok, could have been a lot spicier and there could have been more of it. Nice and thick coconut milk and lots of kaffir lime leave strips.
I would go there again if I needed some decent thai food but all in all, nothing to write home about. I did really like the silverware though. Thai places that give you chopsticks are just not Thai.

Just went to Chaing Mai as a group of 7 for lunch.
Unlike some other Thai restaurants they don’t offer a 3 course set meal at lunch but as the waitress assured us, it was cheaper to eat at lunch than it is at night! I think it was £3.95 for starters and £6.95 for mains.
I opted for the Tom yun chicken as my starter – it was SPICY! My nose sweated quite a lot! It was very good though – the soup was pretty big for a starter but the starter portions of my friend were relatively small.
For my main I had crispy noodles and king prawns with some very very nice broccoli! The broccoli and prawns were scrummy but the sauce was disappointing – it was a bit tasteless and looked like a thickening agent had been used… copiously!
On the whole though it was good but I have eaten at better Thai restaurants in the west end, 5 minutes walk away is Songkran, although Chaing Mai was good, I would advise to go there instead.

My partner and I live in the area and decided to finally try Chaing Mai. We went on a friday night and it was very quiet - only 4 other tables. It all seemed to be going well until we had to ask for our drinks order 3 times and even then we had to go to the bar to remind them of our order.
We ordered the mixed starter and it was the worst one we have had in Edinburgh. The tiny spring rolls and fried prawns tasted like they were from a frozen supermarket packet.
Over an hour later we still didnt have our main courses even though the restaurant was still as empty as when we arrived. After the awful starter, waiting for drinks and non-existent main course, we decided to leave.
After explaining to the waiter why we wanted to leave there was no apology at all. Not even a 'goodbye' when we left.
We will definitely not return to this dreadful restaurant when there are other wonderful cheaper thai restaurants in Edinburgh.
