City Cafe, 19 Blair Street, EH1 1QR, Edinburgh
Long a fan of the city cafe for its wonderful breakfasts, burgers and nachos, I was initially disturbed to hear it had come under new management; I needn't have worried.
Sunday breakfast today - 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 2 eggs, haggis, tattie scone, hash brown, beans (in a separate pot - nice touch) and toast for £6.95.
Quantity great, quality good (bacon could have been a little less salty). So not quite as good overall as the previous City Cafe breakfast but very good nonetheless.
There were also some improvements: the coffee was exceptional, the service very friendly (if possibly too quick) and they've stopped the old method of wrapping the cutlery in a napkin which is then wetted in the corner so it holds together - I always hated that.
So altogether very good; my only concern is whether they still sell burgers and nachos at Sunday brunch as the menu was brunch-specific and they weren't apparent.
Also still a "groovy" venue which to me belongs in black and white and the spirit of the 50s/60s.
