City Cafe, 19 Blair Street, EH1 1QR, Edinburgh

We visited the City Café on Tuesday on the strength of a Happli voucher. Its nice to try new places with a bit of discount.

The café is a replica “American Diner”and looks the part with the red tables, chairs and booths. The booths allow you privacy and makes it a pleasant dining experience. Not a romantic setting, but nice for a quick meal or to have a drink.

We both ordered the Burger with button mushrooms and mozzarella cheese and a portion of onion rings, with a diet coke and a pint of Deuchars. £3.50 for a pint isn't cheap, but you can get three pints in a pitcher for £7.

Having the sauces, Heinz Tomato and Mayonnaise, HP Brown, and French's Mustard on the table, along with napkin and sugar dispenser, adds to the “American Diner” feel. The burgers were nice, tasty and not too firm, with plenty cheese and mushrooms. They could have been warmer, and we should perhaps have sent them back. The chips on the other hand were piping hot and really tasty, as were the onion rings which were proper onion, not minced. We did think that £3 for the onion rings was a wee bit pricey. Our burgers would have cost £8.50 including chips, with prices for the other burgers ranging from £7.50 to £9.

We had read that service can be an issue, but our waitress was friendly and efficient. Absolutely no complaints.

Overall tasty food, a good experience, but not a place to have an intimate meal. It is an ”American Diner” after all and does what it says on the tin.

City Cafe, 19 Blair Street, EH1 1QR, Edinburgh

Long a fan of the city cafe for its wonderful breakfasts, burgers and nachos, I was initially disturbed to hear it had come under new management; I needn't have worried.

Sunday breakfast today - 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 2 eggs, haggis, tattie scone, hash brown, beans (in a separate pot - nice touch) and toast for £6.95.

Quantity great, quality good (bacon could have been a little less salty). So not quite as good overall as the previous City Cafe breakfast but very good nonetheless.

There were also some improvements: the coffee was exceptional, the service very friendly (if possibly too quick) and they've stopped the old method of wrapping the cutlery in a napkin which is then wetted in the corner so it holds together - I always hated that.

So altogether very good; my only concern is whether they still sell burgers and nachos at Sunday brunch as the menu was brunch-specific and they weren't apparent.

Also still a "groovy" venue which to me belongs in black and white and the spirit of the 50s/60s.

A barn of a place. This place reminds me of a Waverley station outlet. Little class and even worse menus. Nachos? Crisps covered in cheese. I realise that some people like these but on the culinary front? Surely an affront to decency.

Sunday breakfast has been better done by Tescos in-store cafe. The interior to this place is pretentious to say the least. What is it trying to be? Sixties or Eighties? It fails as both for me. A typical central venue that rips you off for offering slops. Rotten and over-priced. Avoid is the word of the day.
