We stopped here for a pub lunch on Saturday. It looked like it might provide a cheap and cheerful meal. Unfortunately, it wasn't very much of either.
I wasn't very hungry so ordered one of the cheapest things they had on the menu - a baked potato with tuna and sweetcorn. But they had no tuna, so I chose a quarter pounder and chips instead for the same price (£6.95). My girlfriend had a half pound "homemade" cheese burger with chips as she was starving. It was only about a pound more, and was infintely better value for money. My quarter pounder was a thin, bland piece of meat (had been frozen presumably) in a cheap burger bun whereas the half pound burger looked amazing - big and chunky, definitely homemade and in a soft ciabatta bun. Unfortunately it didn't taste great - too oniony. I don't know why they bother having the rubbish quarter pounder burgers on the menu.
Overall, the menu was far too extensive - I reckon pubs should have no more than a dozen mains on the menu - a homemade burger, sausage and mash, steak pie, fish and chips, lasagne etc. Do a few things and do them right - don't try and please everyone only to leave everyone disappointed!
Good points - the service was very efficient and friendly and they have a big car park.

I have just returned from eating at the Cockatoo and won't be back. Service provided by a miserable young girl who obviously didn't want to be there. My Salmon meal was not properly cooked. When paying I saw a waitress open a microwave and stick her finger in a sweet presumably to find out if it was hot enough. If that is the standard of hygiene then diners beware!

I heard so much great things about the Cockatoo and when I got there I realised everyone was right. It was lovely. The meal was gorgeous, I had the half chicken, very large potion. It is very friendly and the price is fine. I had no complaints so don't listen to these people who just aren't happy with anything in life!!!

Excellent setting, lovely view, friendly staff, great food, even though it was FAR too much for me... if I was hungry I would definitely go back and finish the lot!!! I had the half chicken, was lovely and my partner had the enchiladas... huge portion again... yummy!!! Almost forgot, try the black pudding for starter! Amazing!!! Will definitely go back! Again and again!!!

We were there on the 17/01/2009 and the food gets 5 stars from us and the staff get 5 stars too how any one could complain I do not know it's a 5 star place. There was 14 of us out for a 60th and it worked out at about £24 per head not including drinks. The staff were great catered for our every need! All in all it was a fantastic night. Would definitely recommend it to anyone and we would definitely go again.

We visited the cockatoo last Friday and treated the children to their tea. The portions were great for the kids and the quality of the chicken nuggets is unbeatable. It is very rare to go out for a meal and get chicken nuggets that are exactly that 'chicken' , well done cockatoo ! The staff were great, especially Angela who made us very welcome and encouraged the kids to play at the play area. Great car park, lovely staff and lovely establishment. We could not fault anything. This place is a must, must visit. It is a pleasure to come across such a great place with great food and great prices. I will be returning and have told all my family and friends about the place.

Food was way too expensive, unless you are an OAP then they have a reduced price menu. Average main course was just under £10. Saw them taking frozen veg out of microwave. At least if you are going to charge for it then use fresh food. I had cheese and biscuits for afters. Steer clear, cost just under £6 and cheese was awful. Cheap supermarket shrink wrapped cheddar, no grapes or brie in sight. You could still see the imprint of the wrapper - yuk!!!
Cost us £80 for family of 5 for a meal and drinks, yikes. Staff were lovely but price was way too much. I can get a nicer meal for much less elsewhere...

I had a meal here yesterday with my wife from the Senior Citizens menu. The lentil soup was VG and the steak pies we had were more than we thought there would be and very tasty. As other reviewers have said we found the staff very efficient and friendly.

The service is so slow, it took 15 minutes for soft drinks to arrive at our table and a further 40 minutes for our meal which was burnt and it was only the homemade cheese burger. It will be a long time before we go and if we go back.

I eat fairly regularly here and cannot fault it even when busy they always manage to accommodate if you have not booked, fantastic portion size for all meals. Everything I have had is scrummy! Best eatery in the Lothians! Give it a go!

13th Feb 2010 we have just left the Cockatoo largely disappointed, beautiful place but just a pity the food did not reflect this also. Staff friendly, we got seated in the lovely conservatory, I chose for starter the battered mushrooms and my husband the cheese nachos in a bowl. When the mushrooms came it was obvious they had been deep fried to within an inch of their lives and swimming in grease. Husband's nachos started out very nice but a very small way down into the bowl he discovered they were soggy and had to leave more than half, if this was on a plate, this could have been avoided. 10 seconds after they took our plates away the main meals came, always a good idea to let the starters go down first. I had ordered the chicken stuffed with haggis and whisky sauce, chips and veg. The chicken was stringy, the haggis overpowering, the sauce congealed, and the veg had obviously been boiling all morning. Husband had ordered the bacon and cheese burger, chips, salad. Burger bun was soggy - so soggy half was stuck to the plate when he lifted it up, coleslaw was watery, and the salad poor.
Will not be going back.

Went here a couple of weeks ago with a mate.
Good parking.
Service good.
Haggis fritters starter was OK, but the sauce seemed a bit synthetic and was salty.
Lasagna main course was bland and it appeared to have been microwaved to death.
For the price, not what you'd expect.

Had the Gammon Steak which was pretty greasy and looked like it was cooked in very dirty oil. However my friend had the steak pie which looked great. The Waitress was very sexy - I wanted to gobble her up instead :-)
I will be back as its a nice friendly atmosphere, I will just try something different next time.

Some people are never happy! I have visited the Cockatoo on many occasions and find it to be one of the best places to eat in Edinburgh. I am surprised no one has mentioned the piri-piri chicken as the restaurant is renowned for it! The haggis fritters to start are amazing as is the Stornoway black pudding. The portions are huge and they have a senior citizen and children's menu with smaller portions too. The sticky toffee pudding is a MUST if you can squeeze any more in! They have a gorgeous conservatory area where you can relax and enjoy your meal (no children allowed in the conservatory), a play area for children and a huge car park.
The prices are very reasonable and the staff are fantastic.
Angela and Jim do a great job and ensure you have everything you need to enjoy your experience at the Cockatoo. Enjoy!!!

Actually, the homemade burgers were fantastic, Aberdeen Angus beef, I'm not sure whether you're commenting on the correct place Andy, I am a regular and they do not have baked potatoes on the menu. I had a beautiful pork loin from the specials menu last week. Another very successful business from the Glass family - and for all the right reasons! Exquisite.

My dad works there, chef, so I won't go there, but to be honest the food is good and you get lots on your plate for your money.

One of the best places in Edinburgh. Portions arre massive that says it all for me. Mixed grill was lovely ans the Stornaway black pudding was out of this world. The wife had mushrooms and garlic - total magic.
