They have a sort of grill menu which features burgers, steaks, etc. They do fish as well. I had haddock and chips which was a little disappointing, portion was good but not as tasty as you would get from a chippie.

I have been to compass a few times for lunch. The atmosphere is airy and a great change from the dim pubs on the shore and the food has never failed to please.

I have had a few dishes there and have seen my friends consume a few as well and out of all those plates a food I haven't seen many disappointments. The fishcakes on one occasion were HUGE. Two was more than enough for lunch and served with a nice salad. My friend had the goat cheese tart which looked just as tasty if somewhat of a lighter choice. Another time I tried the fish supper, a nicely cooked piece of haddock, definitely fresh with chips. This dish was being blacklisted by a few other of my mates as it is not served with peas which I gather is a pretty big faux pas. I didn't mind!

I will definitely be visiting Compass again and would give it a try for dinner. The specials always look good as well so will have to give them a try on the next visit.

A great place a bit back from the regs on the shore but watch out on Friday night - the place is packed!

Just a regular pub grub.

I had haddock and chips that tasted dull. No accompaniment with it such as peas or salad.

Bread was tasteless.

Service friendly but food takes long to arrive.

The Compass is a really inviting bar/restuarant, with the candles in bottles, nice wooden tables and stone walls all teasing you in. They could dim the big lights a wee bit more for our taste. We got a nice friendly welcome, and received fantastic service all night. Water, flavoured with strawberries, mint and cucumber along with the bread, butter, oil and balsamic vinegar is a really nice touch, with the water being refilled throughout the night.

The Chilean Toki wine was light and refreshing, reasonably priced at under £14. The fish and chips was absolutely fabulous and the homemade tartar sauce, the nicest that I've had. The cajun chicken came with advice that it was really spicy. Although moist and tender it did not deliver the spicy kick we were promised, and the chilli mayonaisse lacked punch, being simply chilli powder sprinkled on top of the mayo. Chips seemed to be fairly standard frozen fare.

Having seen the sweet menu on the blackboard we waited till we found room to share the sticky toffee pudding. The sauce and ice cream were fine, but the sponge was dry and tasted like it had been microwaved. Not worth the wait and a poor end to the meal. We will go back however.

I thought it would be too good to be true - that you could book online - I was right. Compass had no booking for me so just aswell I printed out the confirmation from this website. Anyway, they couldn't have been nicer, they gave us a table and were obviously concerned that this had happened, turns out their website is under construction so there is no online booking just now. I ordered the seafood chowder which was souperb (I know, I know!) and then the garlic speared aubergine with roast tatties & chilli jam, most excellent. The cheesecake for dessert was ok. House red wine very good and the jazzy entertainment (on a Tuesday) - not sure who the singer was but he was cool. Nice friendly atmoshere. Thinking about going again with some foody friends.

I've eaten here for both dinner and lunch and both have been beautiful meals. Some different meals but done simply. Service is always good and cheerful and the atmosphere really nice.

Also enjoyed a proper selection of bread with oil before the meal which not enough restaurants do these days.

Excellent menu that changes regularly. Bread before meal which is an excellent touch, good service/atmosphere. Would definitely recommend to everyone. Not sure why some people are negative about it. 100% delish for me and all my work mates/friends.

One of the first places that springs to mind when going out for a meal. Food is always good, service is great, prices are very reasonable, especially for the area. Would recommend without hesitation.

I have eaten at the compass many times and have never been disapointed. The big bowls of mussels in various sauces are always tasty. The service is always friendly in a relaxed way and I've never had a long wait for food.

My partner and I were big fans of Compass when we lived in Leith a few years ago, always finding the food to be excellent and the place full of character. Having moved away from the area, we decided to make the trip to try it again recently. Unfortunately, it was not up to the standard we remembered. While the starter was tasty, staff friendly and service quick, our mains were distinctly average; neither of us enjoyed our meal enough to finish it. However, can't argue with the price – we both ate (with drinks) for under £25. Not sure I would return... a shame, as this place was a firm favourite.

Eat out in Edinburgh a lot, but value for money has to go to compass excellent all round. Will definitely be returning.

A great find! We spent a couple of days in Edinburgh and stumbled upon The Compass. We stayed at the Malmaison and wandered into the pub. I had the sweet pepper frittata and it was lovely. It was served with a salsa and new potatoes. My boyfriend had the beef burger, which was a huge portion. He ate it all and ordered the fruit crumble for afters. A lovely atmosphere and excellent value!

I liked this place and would try it again. However, my steak, while tasty, was served on a cold plate and the steak itself was warm, not hot. No veg were served, just a plate of chips. I then ordered sticky toffee pudding which was over cooked. Luckily it was sweet and tasted puddingy but the sponge was flat, barely an inch thick, and the toffee sauce had been cooked into the base of the sponge, rather than being separate and runny. It came with a sort of custard. Excellent coffee. The music was good too. I thought the prices were keen which is why I didn't make a complaint about the steak.
