I have been to compass a few times for lunch. The atmosphere is airy and a great change from the dim pubs on the shore and the food has never failed to please.
I have had a few dishes there and have seen my friends consume a few as well and out of all those plates a food I haven't seen many disappointments. The fishcakes on one occasion were HUGE. Two was more than enough for lunch and served with a nice salad. My friend had the goat cheese tart which looked just as tasty if somewhat of a lighter choice. Another time I tried the fish supper, a nicely cooked piece of haddock, definitely fresh with chips. This dish was being blacklisted by a few other of my mates as it is not served with peas which I gather is a pretty big faux pas. I didn't mind!
I will definitely be visiting Compass again and would give it a try for dinner. The specials always look good as well so will have to give them a try on the next visit.
A great place a bit back from the regs on the shore but watch out on Friday night - the place is packed!

They have a sort of grill menu which features burgers, steaks, etc. They do fish as well. I had haddock and chips which was a little disappointing, portion was good but not as tasty as you would get from a chippie.

Just a regular pub grub.
I had haddock and chips that tasted dull. No accompaniment with it such as peas or salad.
Bread was tasteless.
Service friendly but food takes long to arrive.

I've eaten here for both dinner and lunch and both have been beautiful meals. Some different meals but done simply. Service is always good and cheerful and the atmosphere really nice.
Also enjoyed a proper selection of bread with oil before the meal which not enough restaurants do these days.

Excellent menu that changes regularly. Bread before meal which is an excellent touch, good service/atmosphere. Would definitely recommend to everyone. Not sure why some people are negative about it. 100% delish for me and all my work mates/friends.

One of the first places that springs to mind when going out for a meal. Food is always good, service is great, prices are very reasonable, especially for the area. Would recommend without hesitation.

I have eaten at the compass many times and have never been disapointed. The big bowls of mussels in various sauces are always tasty. The service is always friendly in a relaxed way and I've never had a long wait for food.

My partner and I were big fans of Compass when we lived in Leith a few years ago, always finding the food to be excellent and the place full of character. Having moved away from the area, we decided to make the trip to try it again recently. Unfortunately, it was not up to the standard we remembered. While the starter was tasty, staff friendly and service quick, our mains were distinctly average; neither of us enjoyed our meal enough to finish it. However, can't argue with the price – we both ate (with drinks) for under £25. Not sure I would return... a shame, as this place was a firm favourite.
