Accomplished fish from the city's most established seafood restaurant
![]()
With its claim as being the most established fish restaurant in Edinburgh, having lived in the city for 10 years and never eaten there, I was looking forward to giving it a try. Well located in Hunter Square just off the Royal Mile, it's not surprising that this restaurant enjoys lots of custom throughout the year.
We were greeted and shown to our table by one half of the owning couple, Tim. We were seated in the dining room at the back of the restaurant which isn't the smartest looking room, but has a pleasant homely atmosphere. We were eating on a Wednesday night, but the restaurant still seemed to be booked to capacity including a large group in the room we were in.
Despite having nearly lost his voice, Tim enthusiastically talked us through the various specials available that night and the prices and sizes of lobsters they had on offer. He seemed to be impressed with our choice of wine - a 2007 Iona Sauvignon Blanc - and was quick to point out that they stocked it before it won lots of prizes.
To start I went for the fish pate with Arran oatcakes and Hayley had the fishcake. Served with a nice crispy salad, my pate had a pleasant coarse texture and a fine flavour.
I chose the scallops served on a smoked haddock chowder for my main course. Some people who don't appreciate fresh fish may have regarded the dish as somewhat bland, but the scallops were perfectly cooked with a great delicate flavour and the smokiness of the haddock set the dish off a treat. Hayley's halibut on a bed of mash was equally accomplished and we were both thoroughly satisfied with our choice of mains.
The desserts were unmemorable, as they so often are, and I wished that I'd gone for the selection of Scottish cheeses instead.
The 3 course meal for 2, with a couple of coffees and a good bottle of wine came in at a touch over £100 after the 10% service charge (which is added automatically - understandable, but I have never been a fan of that practise). So not a cheap meal, by any stretch, but justified by the quality of food. One to save for special occasions, perhaps.

Creelers Seafood Restaurant, 3 Hunter Square, EH1 1QW, Edinburgh
I was at Creelers with my girlfriend a couple of months ago now. We had tickets to the opera and chose Creelers for our pre-theatre meal. Whilst it doesn't advertise a pre-theatre menu we found that an early evening menu was on offer. It was hard to overlook as it was considerably cheaper than the a la carte options. I had an exquisite fishcake to start, it was truly remarkable and worthy of gracing the finest of restaurants. To follow I chose the fish pie, perhaps an error as it is similar in type to my choice of starter. The pie was tasty but nothing to rave about.
The most exciting part of the meal was the wine we chose to accompany our meal. Standing out on the wine menu was an English rhubarb wine. It looked interesting and our knowledgeable waitress recommended it, she brought over a sample from the bar before I made the plunge and ordered it. According to the menu it is a great companion to smoked fish, this turned out to be sound judgment.
A bright, fresh, well established place. Reasonably high prices but the quality of ingredients and assurance of a good meal make it almost justifiable. Perhaps a good place to take the in-laws rather than a venue for a pre-drinking social gathering.
