This pub, apparently an ex-pharmacy, now serves other pharmaceutical delights to an ailing populace of hungry, thirsty pub-goers of all walks of life. Students (mostly), tourists, ye olde faithful men, the occassional hen night, etc. Plenty of ales on offer, though beer is above average. the staff are very helpful though, and the unpretentious atmosphere means good times for all.
Kind of like 'Cheers'. That sells drugs. In an old man's pub setting, but with the usual jarring multi-large format screen tellies. Great for watching the footie.
Footie schmooty what's the food like? The usual microwaved food rubbish I suspect. But sometimes, just sometimes, when you're out and sozzled on cider, and your taste buds are under the influence this place will prescribe to you some pub grub that's not too bad. Here's a sample of what I had with some pals recently.
Chicken burger with chips (extra bacon): Above average, with actual bacon (!). Tastes ok and cures hunger.
Spicy chicken wings with mayo dip: Actually quite nice, as a prescription for carnivorism.
Cheesy bacon potato jackets: Again, quite nice. would like more than a shot of that medicine.
Fish and chips: Substandard fish but the chips were plentiful. A bit disappointing for an ol' standard.
They have some platters here too (new). Sorta Italian style antipasto misto (mixed) and Indian style kebabery goodness. Looked okay, but I didn't try it.
Diagnosis? F for fair. In all honesty this place may well be mediocre, but it's hard to not NOT like the place. The cheery and welcoming atmosphere (despite the weirdos hanging around and that's just the students), decent staff and above average food means this is the place for an alcohol injection, and soothe that inflammation of your stomach with their pub grub salves. Schedule an appointment with Doctors. 3 stars.
I leave you with more groanworthy puns:
"Doctors, doctors, can I have a second opinion? "
"Of course, come back here tomorrow."
