Café Domenico, 30 Sandport Street, EH6 6EP, Edinburgh

The four stars I give Dominico's is really a combination of two ratings - It would get 5 stars for being the best take-away sandwich shop for lunch in Leith that i have found (and among the cheapest) and 4 stars for the dinner/lunch meals I have had in the restaurant.

Dominico's is close to where I work and it's always a bit of a treat when I get a sandwich or salad from there. There are no pre-made sandys or salads to chose from which is a star in my book. Service for either is efficient, not hard on the wallet and an overall pleasant experience so much unlike many other lunch joints in Leith.

The best feature of the sandwiches is the variety of fillings and the twists on the old standbys. The tuna salad for example also features veggies in it, not just the old slop of mayo. They usually have mayo-less tuna as well for those watching the calories. Also on offer - pate, many kinds of chese like brie, cheddar, goats cheese and mozzerella, smoked salmon, poached salmon, shrimp, variety of meats, avocado, and different roasted vegetables. All their fillings are great in the regular sandwich or salad.

For takaway lunch you can also get the pasta of the day or soup. I havent had either but from what i have seen, they look good and i wouldnt doubt the quality.

For lunch and dinner eat in, the seating area is small but this lends itself to a sort of intimacy that is great. The owner is nice and treats you like you are in his home. The food is fresh and served promtly. The last meal I had there was pasta with seafood. I can usually finish my plate and lick it clean but this time there was no chance of that! Might have been due to the copious amounts of wine, but the portion size was still pretty huge. All the other plates looked just as amazing, some of the fish plates looked a bit small but i heard they were filling.

We all left happy, buzzed off the wine and the food. Would happily go there again and i am sure i will.

This place is a perfect gem tucked down a side street in The Shore. Dinner here a week ago was fantastic. The shared veg/meat/fish antipasto had variety and everything was delicious. A main of fish was superb, although perhaps a little small if you're a large eater. This isn't so much of a problem if you're happy to fill up with bread, as they are accommodating when you ask for extra. With a bit of space for dessert we ordered lime cheesecake and vanilla icecream special with amaretto and espresso to pour over. This was divine. All in all a lovely meal, and very reasonable at £75 for 3 courses and a bottle of wine for 2.

Service was also outstanding from the owner who is attentive but not overbearing.

I used to work across the road from here and the lunchtime menu was sometimes the only thing that got me through the week!

Great pasta dishes (huge portions) and soups as well as fresh tasty sandwiches to take away or eat in.

Evenings are intimate and with the food so tasty, Domenico's always delivers a first class experience.
