Gordon's Trattoria, 231 High Street, EH1 1PE, Edinburgh

This is one of the most unusual restaurants I have encountered in Edinburgh. It's location, central to the Royal Mile, is second to none, but its homecooked Italian fayre is very much like something you would find down a narrow back alley.

I would go to the ends of the earth for a homecooked Italian meal (although, I realise, one only needs to travel as far as Italy), but the food here is not what one would expect from the term. The portions are hugely oversized, and I wondered whether the waitress had supplied me with the pot the minestrone soup was cooked in rather than just a bowl. Equally, the main course of pizza struggled to arrive at the table due to the fork-lift-truck which was required to deliver the massive, crusty behemoth of a platter.

There was a general disregard for quality elsewhere, and the waitresses seemed to be intent on freeing up the table for the non-existent crowds waiting to be seated rather than extending politeness and grace.

Safe to say, if quantity is preferable to quality, this is the place for you!

It's difficult to complain, though, as this is credit-crunch (and belly) busting food and the bill certainly belied the Royal Mile location which, if you're a large family, you would probably appreciate the lack of savoir-faire in favour of hastily delivered, cleared, and presented food.

In all, certainly no my kind of place and not somewhere I would consider visiting again, but it serves its place as a low-end of the market eatery in a high-end area.

Gordon's Trattoria, 231 High Street, EH1 1PE, Edinburgh

We went here for a meal last year before we actually moved to Edinburgh. We knew it might be a little pricey due to its location. However, it was a rather strange experience. There was a vast amount of food on the plate, even for the starter. I barely managed my main of carbonara because I was so full. Also, mains were brought to the table before the starters had been finished. I found this frustrating and made the table cramped.

The food itself was ok but nothing special. If anything, it was a bit too stodgy and certainly not up to the standard I would expect at an italian.

I hope they have improved since we last went but I won't be hurrying back to find out.
