Hector's has got to be one of the best, most laid back bars in Edinburgh to hang out at the weekend with friends, read the papers, drink some beer and have some decent pub food.
A friend and I went on Sunday afternoon for some food. We each had a burger. Properly big and chunky homemade burger with decent fries and fresh crisp green salad. Turned out that the salad was a little bit too fresh - my friend had a healthy looking big green juicy live caterpillar in his. The bar is pretty dark through the back and he picked it up and was about to eat it, thinking it was a bit of lettuce until he almost squished it between his fingers. We pointed it out to one of the super-friendly staff who were absolutely mortified and gave us that meal for free as well as a free round of drinks.
So, excellent service and atmosphere, good selection of beers on tap and decent pub food with bonus larvae. I'll be back.

I go to Hectors fairly regularly as it is my local bar. I love the décor and the intimacy of the place. Drinks are fairly reasonable and there is always a good atmosphere. The food is really good for pub snacks, the maris piper chips are the best around! They have a really good bar snacks section on the menu – all at £3.50 – I strongly recommend the quesadillas, generous portion for a small price!
Hectors is always busy so you might have to hang around before you get a seat and the food is a bit slow but I think that adds to the laid back style of the place.
My only negative is the service… most of the bar staff are really great, friendly, chatty and for the most part you do get service with a smile. There are however a couple of surly bar maids who work at Hectors and they do service with anything but a smile. I was in there once and overheard one of them telling a customer to ‘f off’ when they told her to ‘cheer up’. I have heard a few stories about bad service received at Hectors which really is a shame as it’s a great wee bar and it would be nice to have service that enhanced the cosy atmosphere rather than act to its detriment…

I have been to this place for food and am a regular for drinks but would say it is a better place to go for drinks. It's popular with locals so can be hard to get a seat but once you do you can relax in this laid back bar. Good range of beers of tap as well as in bottles.
Food wise service can be slow so dont go if you are in a hurry. I have been for brunch several times and you can be left waiting for at least 30mins which is fine if you are having a lazy Sunday reading the papers as many of the locals do but not if you are wanting a quick bite to eat.

Good range of nibbles to share, we went at about 9 on a thursday night and there were plenty of people in the bar providing lots of atmosphere, good value from the shared meals as we all left well fed. Restaurant food with real ales on tap.

Haven't yet tried the food menu but the atmosphere has always been very chilled when I have been in for drinks and the bar staff have always been friendly and attentive. A great place to meet in the evening, out of the centre for an alternative Edinburgh venue and good selection of beers and wines. Also a great placed to relax on the sofas with the weekend papers and good company.

Quite a big bar but retains the intimate atmosphere by having diffuse lighting, big dribbly candles and plenty of tables of all sizes. Usually they have a decent selection of beers on tap. Can get a bit busy at the weekends.
