I am going to change my review on Howie's because I went here again yesterday for lunch and had a completely different experience from the first time I had lunch here.
The first time I went I thought the service was excellent: our waiter was very friendly, efficient and our lunch was served after only ten minutes of ordering (which suited me perfectly considering I was on my work lunch break).
However, I went again yesterday and was very disappointed. The waitresses were quite rude and the girl who was serving our table did not crack a smile once - she did not check up on us once to see if everything was OK (a sign of a poor waitress) and she was very slow. A stark contrast to the week before where our waiter was brilliant.
The food also took over 35 minutes to come and considering the restauraunt was quiet this was poor - it was only two soups and a sandwich for goodness sake!
Finally, the decor was looking very tired which I failed to notice first time round.
The only saving grace was that the food was cheap and the cheescake was delicious.
I would recommend that Howie's employ some waitresses with some personality.
What a shame that my return to Howie's did not match the high expectation that I had encountered first time round.

Firstly I would like to say that I don't normally do this but I was looking for a nice restaurant to take my wife and guests for a special occasion and Howies came up first on google, I also looked at this site to see the reviews and since I had a great time a thought I would advise you.
We sat at a table looking out onto Calton Hill, the young waiter was excellent and looked after us all night, so much so I think my wife wanted to take him home!
All three courses were very nice, especially the dessert which the waiter informed us was "calorie free" but I wouldn't take him at his word.
We don't eat out much as we have a small child and it's great to know that when you do, you have a reliable restaurant to go to and won't be let down.
Well done Howies and in particular the waiter who looked after us. Sorry I have forgotten your name, maybe I should ask my wife!!!
