I booked my work lunch at the Hunters Tryst this year. I have a few complaints to say the least. 1) one of my lunch guests drove for 45 minutes to meet us just to find out that she was not allowed in with her child. This was at 12 in the afternoon and there was 6-10 other people in the pub. I think this is disgusting! 2) We had prebooked our meal but it still took 40 minutes to serve our starters and they missed one person's starter and dessert.

If you would like good, friendly service I suggest you go elsewhere! I will not be going back and I will be telling everyone I know to do the same.

Pleasent surroundings and staff friendly. Easy parking. Food is better standard than the Brewers Fayre chain and you won't have screaming kids running around. Food is usual pub offerings but the portions are huge. BBQ ribs are superb.

About 12 or us descended on the Hunters Tryst yesterday about 4pm,plenty tables to choose from, nice and warm, wine was sensibly priced, food excellent value for money (2 for 1 menu) ample servings, good service. Only slight critisism, more training for the female bar staff but overall an excellent experience. We will return.

Spent 25 minutes sitting at table waiting for someone to take my order. Unfortunately no one did and I left. My advice is "don't go there if you are hungry".

This was a disapointment. The two fish suppers were cold as were the plates. The ham shank was tasteless and again the plate was cold and the ham tepid.

There seemed to be only one waitress and she wasn't in the mood to hurry.

The prices are cheap but the food not good value.

Not a good experience.

Don't try to fill in their survey online - they try to get you to purchase goods.

Really disappointed to find that the fish that was being used on the special menu (buy 1 get 2nd for £1) is river cobbler. Was suspicious of the taste. At least they were honest. However the batter was lovely.

Again like my last review; this is a pub that I have frequented quite regularly over the past 7 years as it is a mere 5-10 mins up the road from my house. It has been a bit of a roller-coaster ride with the choice of staff after a previous manager left, however I am glad to report that the staff (at the time of writing this) are great.

The staff a polite, friendly, attentive and well presented. Best of all, they don’t make you wait while they finish their little ‘chat’ with their friends, something I find REALLY ignorant of some other pubs I have been to.

As an Ember Inns pub, it has a variety of cask ales along with a good cross section of wines and your popular lagers, soft drink and coffee. The décor is very relaxing (almost sometimes like you are in your own home having a drink) and clean. There are even ‘sofa’ areas which are accompanied by real log fires (I have seen them cleaning them out!) which, if you can get in the winter when it’s snowing, it will have you there all day! There is also a small beer garden outside with a sheltered seating area in case of rain.

The restriction on children has now been removed and the pub is actively encouraging families to visit. They also have a specific area set aside for families so that other patrons that are not quite as fond of kids can still have an adult environment to relax. If you are eating late though, maybe double check with the staff, because I remember reading somewhere that there is a ‘Scottish Law’ that prohibits under 18s being in a licensed premises after 20:30, this may or may not apply anymore though.

The food is good (both standard pub grub, and also some restaurant dishes as well), with some new specials on the menu that I particularly like (grilled chicken & Pasta in a creamy sauce - nom, nom!). The sizes of the portions are just about right and the atmosphere is very relaxed. (a bit of a controversial statement, but there is a pub quite close down the road, that seems to ‘absorb’ the less savoury types in the neighbourhood) Even at the busy times the bar is not overly mobbed and I have yet to visit and not manage to get a table.

If I had one gripe, it would be that they can sometimes be understaffed, mix this with someone requesting multiple ground coffees and you could be waiting a while to get served. The staff visibly try to cope, but there is a limit to how much they can be stretched.

I hope this comes across a favourable review and the powers that be read it, because the current staff and management should be commended on turning around an establishment that unfortunately going downhill at a rapid rate.

Recommended.

Where are all the up to date opinions? Went there yesterday Sunday 4 September 2011. The place was about 1/3rd occupied if that. Ordered a meal and drinks for three of us. Took about 15 minutes for the one starter for my daughter. Still worse was to follow we had to wait 45 minutes for the mains to arrive and that only happened after I asked when we were getting served!

The food arrived but no flat mushrooms and obviously there was a shortage of frozen chips. (12 on my plate, 13 on my son's and 15 on my daughter's and they were not big, fat or freshly cooked either). Asked about the mushrooms and was told I had been informed on ordering, that they had no mushrooms. I replied that was not the case and asked for reduction. But no reduction - attitude of woman was not conducive to good customer relations either.

The reason for waiting so long was "they were busy" but the place only had 6 tables occupied when I walked around!

Needless to say I was not impressed and it spoiled the day for me as I don't often manage to get my 2 adult children together for a meal. Maybe that is why they only invite complaints about your drink on all the signs around the place.

Had a great meal with friends at the Hunters Tryst. Large orders, staff great to chat to and always return. I love that they don't allow children under 14 in - it's a great policy! Grill night is a great offer... happy to wait if there's a delay.

Nb. to a previous comment (Peter) - you order at the bar!
