Quality local ingredients served up in a cosy atmosphere

Slightly hidden just off Howe Street in the New Town, the restaurant at the Iglu is quite a small establishment, above the similarly intimate bar.
The weather on the night we visited was typical for Edinburgh during the festival - absolutely torrential rain. So to cheer us up we splashed out on a fine Marlborough Pinot Noir. At £28 it landed somehwere around the middle of their wine list. There's not much choice if you want to spend less than £15 on a bottle, but there is a nice selection if you're willing to push the boat out slightly.
Keeping with the them of ordering comfort food that would take our minds off the weather and our wet feet, we ordered mainly hearty meaty dishes. I opted for the wood pigeon with red onion jam followed by the lamb shank while my partner had smoked mackerel pate followed by steak. We both decided that we could have ordered almost anything off the menu - the only thing that didn't tempt us was the sole vegetarian offering - a tartlet of goats cheese and sun-dried tomato. Veggies might be best sticking with David Banns!
Overall, the food was hard to fault. The Iglu go to some effort to point out that they source their ingredients locally from small suppliers where possible and this certainly seems to show in the end result. Our main courses consisted of some of the most tender and tasty beef and lamb we'd had. If I have to find fault, then I could argue that the steak was cooked more medium-rare than the medium ordered. At first we were unsure about the lack of a steak knife but the meat was so incredibly tender that it absolutely was not necessary! The presentation of the steak could have been better as well - the plate was a bit too small for all the food resulting in the steak balancing on top of the chips, making the first few mouthfuls a bit of a nightmare!
The sticky toffee pudding went down well for dessert (when does it ever disappoint?!), but the dark chocolate ganache torte was slightly disappointing - a little too dense and a bit too much like hard work to eat!
We finished the meal off with a couple of coffees and the bill came to about £90. Definitely fair for a 3 course meal of such quality.
