Affordable authentic Indian dining
![]()
Imans opened in November last year and, when two of us went one Thursday evening, we found the Indian restaurant surprisingly busy. Assured by the number of people eating there that specific night, we were sure that we had made a good choice. We were greeted with a warm welcome and the atmosphere was welcoming with a delicious aroma of fresh Indian cuisine. Iman's is a BYOB and, as an added bonus, they don't charge you any corkage making this a perfect eating choice for those of us suffering from the credit crunch. To start, we had the Imans sharing platter which came with all the regular Indian tit-bits; pakoras, various meats and a selection of hot and cooling sauces. It was quite a generous portion and I would recommend it. However, we didn't quite finish it as we didn't want to spoil our mains.
For our mains, I opted for the chicken masala korma and my dining partner had the Desi Saag - a lamb and spinach dish based on a recipe by the head chef's mum. We both shared a peshawari naan which was definitely the highlight of the meal - it was delicious and, without a doubt, the nicest peshawari I have tasted! My chicken masala korma was the best choice of the two mains as the chicken was perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicious. Only complaint is that the dish was a little spicier thaa I was expecting which slightly ternished my experience as I kept having to ask for more glasses of water! The lamb and spinach dish was good but didn't have as much flavour as my chicken dish.
By the time we had finished our mains, we were full to the brim and couldn't manage a pudding. The service throughout our meal was efficient; the food came quickly and the waiters were friendly.
Our bill came to £32 which I thought seemed quite reasonable considering the amount of food that we ate! Like for like mains are probably a couple of quid cheaper at Iman's than comparable Indians in the area, making this a very affordable place to go for a quick meal any night of the week.
I would highly recommend Imans for a low-budget and authentic Indian meal.

I am amazed at there not being an abundance of favourable reports on Imans. My wife, family and many friends have been regular visitors to Imans since it opened in November and have never had cause for complaint. The food is authentic and superb, service is great and the atmosphere pleasantly open. BYOB without corkage is an added bonus and all the food, including "House specials" excellent value. In my opinion Imans is going to be a leading light on the Edinburgh Punjab eating scene.
