Eating out is not always about dining on the finest food. There is also the element of value and getting what you pay for. In this respect the Jolly Restaurant on Elm Row delivers. I challenge anyone to fault a place serving honest fare for fair prices. Having eaten there a few times I have never left disappointed. Had a paid La Favourita prices however, I would have left in a huff and never returned.

The Jolly offers your typical Italian food, pizzas and pastas mostly, a few appetisers on offer, salads, etc. I cant quite recall exact orders, but have had both the pizza and the pasta and remember being pleased with them.

Each time I have been in there they have been busy yet the service has been decent. Not overly friendly but efficient which is what you want when you are hungry! no muss no fuss!

Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a quick and cheap bite to eat in the area. If you are going on a date however, I would shy away! The pub next door is also a bit dodgy and in fact the last time that we were there we had to dodge punches from a pub brawl that spilled outside!

Visited here with my sister a few weeks ago.

The pizzas are spectacular! I can't remember what mine was called but it was vast, with lots of meat and covered in rocket. It also came with Chilli oil which I've always loved so I asked for the bottle so I could add some more.

I can really eat a lot but even i couldn't finish this. My sister ate less than half of hers so that gives you an idea of what a normal person would eat.

Total Bill including wine and coffee was £30+

Really we shouldn't have had a starter, perhaps I'll remember that next time. There definitely will be a next time.

This is a family favourite for filling, tasty cheap food. The service is amusing and the place always seems lively. I've never been when it has been less than 80% full. There are other nearby italians but Jolly's produces tasty food for cheaper.

Friendly atmosphere oozes like the smell of the woodburning stove. Whether it's the staff or the customers I am not too sure but we left very satisfied indeed.

For a set menu it did have an extensive choice about 18 main dishes, where can better that?

The a la carte was also mid budget but it's the lunch theatre menu that creates the satisfied feeling of very good value.

A Brazillian waiter was most congenial as our host, maitre'd and this set the tone for a highly enjoyable meal. Portions were ample and the food done to an Italian turn. Dessert was basic in the set menu but the starter choice and main courses were really expansive.

You could find fault in the wine list if you wanted to as there was only Italian and the style was not what you would call modern, but I think these can be overlooked considering the good points and the price really is a bargain find. You can't get much better really and it was a treat.

I cannot believe anyone enjoys this place. Cheap and cheerful? Well it's definitely cheap but the taste of the food confirms this. Starters are a throw back from the 80s, look and taste awful. The pasta was over powering with garlic that I could taste it for hours afterwards. The bacon was frozen cubes that were full of water. Myself and my boyfriend barely ate anything that was put infront of us. The music - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep and YMCA?! We felt we were are a kids party. It couldn't have been any cheesier. The chef obviously does not know what Italian cuisine should taste like. And for everyone that says how great the pizzas are. Well of course they will be great - to sprinkle some cheese and mushrooms over a dough and pop it in a lovely woodburning oven - what a hard job for any chef to do? Disappointed is an understatement. If you are going to go to the trouble of spending some money on a night out and looking to dine Italian cuisine - in this current economic climate - don't waste your money and stay clear of this place: I'm sure for a few extra few pounds a head you could at least get something that you can eat, tastes Italian, without the kids party music, and not walk away feeling you have been ripped off!

We live locally and have known the Jolly Vito (its owner) and staff for over 20 years. The food is terrific, the house wine very palatable, and the service friendly. The decor adds to the whole dining experience. This may not be the exclusive establishment that some may seek, but you could certainly never describe it as cheap and cheerful! Well done The Jolly - here's to the next 20 years!!!

I have been going to the Jolly for 41 years even when it was further down leith walk my son had his first pizza in there at the age of three. He is 44 now and he is taking his family. Value for money and Vito is the bees knees.

Going again tomorrow,

What a satisfying gourmet experience.

Not stylish but excellent food, reputation and following as they have a regular clientele.

The Wood smoked pizzas are a speciality. Top drawer. See my picture of the pizza topping overflowing and brimming over.

Going to The Jolly is like getting a cuddle from your Granny, you'll never be disappointed. The food is good but, for me, the best thing is the atmosphere created by the charismatic owner and his following of loyal diners that come back time after time. To top it off, you get a lolly as you pay!

Like the attitude where it's geared up to food and service rather than earning money.

Went there with my son and two daughters and loved the dated look of the place, but loved the food better. Went back on a later date with my hubby - he also loved it. Will be back again.
