The Khukuri Nepalese Restaurant, 8 West Maitland Street, EH12 5DS, Edinburgh

A friend and I went to The Khukuri the other night expecting some interesting and new (to us) Nepalese food. Instead we ate some really good Indian. I understand that Nepalese cuisine is quite similar to Indian but it also should have hints of northern Chinese cooking and other countries of that region. Unfortunately, I could not find any indication of these on the menu or when I spoke with our waiter who when asked if he had any recomendations could not formulate any sort of opinion. Usually this is a bad sign.

But we trucked on. We shared a starter of Dolakha raja jhinga which is described on the menu as "king prawn cooked with fresh garlic, lemon, methi, tomato, and dhania and served with a small chapati". This was excellent. All the flavours coming through, but what is methi? I dont know, but it was delicious. For out mains we had Namche bhenda, a lamb dish and sag paneer, the ubiquitous indian spinach and cheese dish. The lamb was tender and flavourful in a wonderful sauce, just enough spice. The sag was a bit disappointing, the paneer pieces were not as tangy and tender as they should have been. We also had naan bread and rice, both up to par.

If we do visit again we will be sure to have our before dinner drinks there as they were really cheap! Lessons learned. A good place for a curry or curryish meal and since the place was completely booked out after 730 I think there is a chance I missed out on something.

A group of us ate at Khukuri’s last night for my little brother's birthday. I had been recommended this little restaurant by a number of friends and colleagues and we were not disappointed.

We had booked in for an early Sunday evening dinner and got there about 6, it wasn’t busy and for the 2 hours we were there, there were another 3 tables in for some scran.

Decor is very dated with lots of lit up photos of the Himilayas, however, more importantly the service was very good without being overly attentive and the food was fantastic. I went for the number 51 which was a korma type dish with honey and almond mixed in – I’m not overly keen on spicy stuff so this was a good option for me. It was rather sweet though so may not appeal to everyone.

We each had a main dish and had several portions of rice, 2 pashwari nanns, a plain nann, roti bread, poppadoms and various pickles in which to dip our extras and several beers. In total the bill came to about £120 – for 6 people we thought that was very reasonable.

Nice little touch – they obviously picked up in it being my brother’s birthday and brought him a shot of flaming sambuca – free of charge – to round off the evening.

A very pleasant meal – would definitely recommend and I’m sure we’ll be back again soon!

A small and fantastic curry house hidden away in Haymarket, very unassuming from the front, in fact very unassuming from the inside, but great food. I first went here a couple of years back however cannot remember what I had, just that it was a great meal. I recently went back again for a 2nd helping and it was just as good as I remembered.

The (apparently) traditional Nepalese Bara we had was a very tasty lentil pancake served with more than its fair share of condiments, in fact enough for two. Onto the main and the rice and naan bread were good, nothing mindblowing but both tasty.

The main dish I went for Kukhura Nepal and damn tasty it was too, perfectly spiced with all flavours that should have been present coming through, the meat was also succelent and well cooked. Not only that but it was a plentiful serving and reasonably priced (takeaway menu).

There are plenty of Indian restaurants in the west end of town but this is certainly the best all rounder, especially given the high prices of some of its nearby competitors.

Went here last week and had great food. If you're looking for plush surroundings etc then this isn't the place to come. You come here for the grub and the friendly service.

I can't really comment on how nepalese the food is but I'll comment on what it was like.

It's a small restaurant and can feel a bit cramped. We thought we'd come along on a really quiet night as we were the only people there at 8 on a Thursday night but no, everyone just came later! The waiters are very friendly, helpful and awfully polite.

I like mild curries (sorry) so I went for the number 51 which is some type of korma with honey and almond. I had the lamb version which was absolutely delicious. They had put cumin seeds in it which really gave it a beautiful taste. It wasn't the creamy, yellowy white stuff of so many other curry houses.

The rest of the guys were massively impressed with their food and we all left feeling stuffed and happy.

Great food and incredibly polite waiters! The decor is a bit dated but I kind of think that adds to it's charm so expect pictures of Mt Everest etc. Milder than Indian food and well prepared, good value lunch meals as well. I have been a few times now over the years and always enjoyed my meal. You may not be able to move for awhile though as it's just so filling! It's not a huge restaurant so book ahead if at the weekend. Food is cooked and served plain and simply - they way good food should be and not pretentious like some of its neighbours are perhaps guilty of...

I am not really a lover of Indian / Nepalese food, but this place is just superb. I love it!

The sauces to me are slightly more aromatic, and one of my favourite dishes here is a chicken korma with honey and coconut! It is simply outstanding.

Drinks and sides are value for money.

Highly recommended as one of the best Nepalese / Indian restaurants in Edinburgh.

The best Nepalese restaurant I have ever been to. Perfect taste, familiar staff. I really appreciate the co-operation done by Nepali Daiharu and the owner was really awesome. most of the time he was conscious about the customer feedback and their suggestions. We were there continuously for two days in Edinburgh with the lovely dinner and time with Khukuri. We still miss the Khukuri restaurant.
