MULTIPLE 5 star reviews? Is it as good as it's hyped up to be? READ ON dear readers, read on with bated curry breath and trepidation!
One of the Platinum Blonde's favourite hang-outs, surprisingly I've never been to what's been regarded (and I can only back this up apocryphically) the 'oldest' most 'established' Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. Right next to the Liquid Rooms, I've been assured it can be quite noisy during an Evol club night. Or any other club night. I can assure you though, that Khushi's is rather noisy in it's own right, and I was practically shouting to my dinner partner trying to hold a conversation against the gaggle of hen nights, student graduation parties, families, and the throngs and throngs of Indian cuisine diners. Nice post-modern James Bond-villian decor though. You can see the kitchen and everything, with waiters hovering about.
And if there was an exotically subcontinental James Bond villian (as Ian Fleming would imaginate him to be. Vin Daloo fr'instance) this is precisely the food he'd eat! Here's what me and the Platinum Blonde had:
Starters: Samosa & Chicken Pakora (garnished with a ginger, and pickled carrot salad with yoghurt chilli dip).
Mains: King Prawn Curry & Lamb Karahi, served with boiled rice.
All in all, the cuisine? Excellent! Hell, they better be for the price I'm paying. Fantastic haute cuisine presentation, great tastes, latent heat (spicy, but not too spicy. Just right, as it lingers in the background). The meat and curries cooked to perfection, lovely moist juicy tender lamb, and not a rubbery prawn in sight. Absolutely delicious.
So why such a low score? (3.5 out of 5)
This would be a 4, if it weren't for the rushed atmosphere. A laidback place this is not, and I like to eat my curries laid back. I did get to stay for quite a while though after polishing off the plates, so for that I'd also be coming back to explore what else is on the menu (yum!) but due to it's supersized dining experience (in which I feel like I've gatecrashed someone's massive wedding dinner celebrations and there's no-one I know in the room and where the hell is the bridge and groom?) it's a bit of a downer there. Still, if one can get used to the spice I suppose I'll take to the space soon enough.
Have i mentioned it's a Bring Your Own Booze place? That probably accounts for all the 5-star reviews for this place you can read at your own comfort. Note: This place seemingly doesn't serve alcohol, so you better bring your own!
One sentence review? - If you want some nice up-marketedly priced rice, hurry here for some curry.

I have been to Khushis a number of times now and it has never failed to deliver. Everything I have eaten here has tasted absolutely amazing. I was only there on Friday evening but want to go back there now (Monday).

Went here for dinner recently. you can bring in your own booze, the food is good, the services is nice, the setting is quite good and impressive and the tables are well spread out.
However, I felt it had all been overhyped. I really liked old Khushis and there was something vaguely average about our meal. I couldn't put my finger on it. Perhaps it was because I was sober.
In any case it was good value for the food and I'd recommend it. The fish curry was very tasty and we had this spinach side dish which was excellent.
Also they do these fruit smoothies which I'd not had before and they were fab!
I'll go back but will leave the hype at home!

What a place! I believe it claims to be the longest running Indian restaurant in the city; it is certainly one of the best. The food is wonderful and you always get more than enough. It is ultra modern inside and you will feel like leaving a big tip. As an aside, it has both an Indian and a Pakistani flag up outside, hanging side by side - makes you proud of your city.

Great tasty food from a small but perfectly formed menu, refreshing after overly complicated menus in other Indians in town, the Jalfrezi is my particular favourite. BYOB is good though the old premises were better for bringing the booze from next door as you could bring pints in whereas now you just go next door and buy it by the bottle. Bit noisy due to the size of the place and the bass of the Liquid rooms below which does spoil the atmosphere somewhat for smaller groups and couples.

The food was great nearly fantastic which is great for a restaurant.
The BYOB bottle idea is excellent too especially that you dont have to pay for corkage.
But the place is horrendous and makes it a just above average dining experience. The place is far too noisy due to it size, you have to shout to be heard and you can hear the bass line from the liquid rooms. The decoration looks cheap and tacky.
Finally there are too many waiters so it makes the service really impersonal and cold.

I've been to Khushi's a few times now and it is always great. Their veggie selection is not bad for a non-veggie restaurant and their carrot and orange juice is gorgeous (though I've yet to convince anyone else to try it too...). And I'd heartily recommend the tandoori mushrooms - totally yum.
I agree that the place can be really quite noisy, that's what has cost it half a star! But when it is quiet, it's lovely. I noticed that some of the other reviews stated that the staff were impersonal or that they rushed you, I have to say that I have never had those experiences.
The staff are very quick at delivering the food and clearing up, but they also have a fantastic sense of humour and are always ready for a giggle. However, they don't hang around, they are always speeding off to help someone else, so that may make them appear rushed.
On our last visit, they were quick to bring the bill, but left us to chat for another half an hour at least - we were the ones to move, they didn't make us feel as if we had to.
And they have never lurked when I've been in, except to clean up a very, very messy table that we'd covered in poppadom and naan crumbs - oops ;)
All this and at a quite reasonable price too - Khushi indeed :)

If eating at an Indian restaurant for you involves pretending to browse the menu, then every time ordering a korma, rice and naan, accompanied by beer/white wine; if you like your dishes a la ½ pound of refined sugar and vegtable fat; essentially if what you really want is a Marks and Spencers ready meal in a restaurant and scorn any form of authentic Indian cuisine; Khushi’s is just the place for you.
If you are looking for something a bit more authentic, avoid Khushi’s. I have eaten here several times. Initially I had an open mind, and was impressed by the palatial décor. The food, however, is ultra-bland, and most of the dishes seem to taste of mildly spiced Heinz tomato soup. On my third visit I tried the Jalfrezi, often a good dish with which to judge an Indian restaurant against its competitors. The dish itself had little flavour, while the naan was overly sweet.
A very wise restaurateur said to me that the most important thing about the diner experience is to be made to feel special, that you are important to the restaurant and its staff. While Khushi’s is clean and well appointed, it feels like a warehouse, corporate and without passion, and I get the feeling of being just another number in the machine, certainly anything but special.

Really excellent, I have visited Khushis on Victoria Street many times to sit in and the one on Broughton St for takeaway - excellent service, and the food is second to none. The stuffed fish curry is my favourite.

I've been here a few times and it's a great restaurant. There is always a good atmosphere and it is reasonably priced. The food is fantastic - especially the lamb saag and garlic naan which are brilliant.

I'm sorry to be a dissenting voice but we visited early on a Friday night and were rather disappointed. Food was average (if that), and the staff were over-speedy to the point of brusqueness.

Have to say was disappointed, food was ok however service was rushed and we felt that they couldn't get us out the door quick enough to use the table again, four waiters standing close by with cloths and bill put on table before we had even finished drinks doesn't make for a relaxing time.
