Went to the Kings Wark with some co-workers for lunch on a Friday. It was packed out so I was glad that we had a reservation. Great atmosphere, a true, old style pub with decent food that goes way beyond what you usually find. The ingredients were fresh and freshly prepared and there were numerous specials of the day.

I ordered the seafood chowder which came topped with paprika mayonaisse which at first I thought was rather strange but it was a nice complement to the chowder. I was a bit dissapointed at first as I had ordered a man course sized portion and what came I thought to be rather small. Upon leaving the pub however, I was glad that the chowder didnt come in a bohemouth of a dish!

My co-workers enjoyed their choices as well, a steak sandwich, one of the fish specials and a rabbit rissotto. The only complaint here was that the risotto could have had much more rabbit, but it was nicely flavoured overall.

I will forgive that it took quite a while for us to be served as it was realy busy and we arrived at the peak of the day. Next time will have to try a little earlier or later.

A great place for good pub grub and fish specials.

We had been to the King's Wark some 15 years ago, and we still raved about a chicken dish that one of us had at that time. Being a fan of a cooked breakfast we had long talked about going on a Sunday morning, and finally booked a table to go with friends.

Unfortunately, the service was appalling with long waits to get drinks, menus, food and even to pay the bill. We were so hungry waiting for the food to arrive, we had to ask for more toast. Still, we thought that the food would be good, having heard rave reviews about the cooked breakfast. Don't believe everything you read! It wasn't worth the wait! Small, uninspiring, without much flavour and overpriced. The tin lid was that the usual quarter of a tattie scone had been cut in half, the five small cubes of potato we each got hardly making up for someone else getting the rest of our tattie scones. Being with friends we were reluctant to complain too much at the time.

We did write to the owners, but the response was really along the lines of it wasn't our fault, we are not a big chain and we are trying our best. As we had booked our table in advance, they knew we were coming, so it was hardly our fault that they allowed in more customers than they could cope with. If the rest of the food is anything like the breakfast, then this establishment is vastly over rated. We won't be going back.

Very friendly wee pub, totally unpretentious and with excellent food, how pub eating ought to be. My lanb was awesome, and I can vouch for the Cod and the smoked haddock.

Very friendly staff were happy to accomodate our unusual timing, we ate as soon as the kitchen opened then legged it to a show and returned for puddings and coffee later, not sure that would be encouraged in all their customers but our request was greeted with a genuine smile.

only complaints were a couple of sub-standard puddings.

Go there for good food in a relaxed setting.

broughtonhotel: you have a clue! That's why this bar won the best pub grub award in Scotland 2008!!! It's a bar that is unchanged by time hence the toilets. Filthy?? Nah. It's called original architecture for your information. Oven chips? Don't think so. Maybe you're confusing it with McDonalds? No rude staff either. Utter rot. Great grub and I saw Alex Salmond there the other evening tucking in. Atmosphere tops too. Best. Greny: does not eating mussels anywhere always give you this after effect? Frankly I think it does.

Visited King's Wark on 18 Feb 2010. Six of us found the food excellant value for money. Very friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. We ate in the restaurant. A very varied menu. Shall be going again.

We love this place, the food is always excellent, the service fast and friendly and it's reasonably priced. Particularly recommend the chowder (and yes the paprika mayonnaise works well!) and any of the rissottos. Recently, subtly refurbished - delighted that it was kept the same. It's homely, comfortable in summer and cosy in winter by the fire. Think I am right in saying it's the oldest (or one of the oldest) pubs in Leith? Try it...

I've eaten out here virtually every week since June. Breakfast, lunch and supper. In the restaurant and in the bar. Met lots of interesting fellow appreciative diners, everyone always willing and helpful during busy times. Turnover is speedy and tables are never left vacant for more than a second (hence some still may have the last diner's debris) but staff are always efficient and helpful. Food is fabulous - a real delight for a fish feast.

Went there on Saturday night for dinner. Food was great, especially seafood chowder.

Food took its time but was told it is because everything is freshly prepared and it seems to taste that way. Great

staff, all very helpful and bill was very easy on the pocket.

Had a great night out.

Second visit to Kings Wark (visiting from Dundee) and been very impressed both times. We found the food excellent, staff friendly and helpful and atmosphere bustling. Bill very reasonable. Steamed mussels, chowder yummy, smoked haddock risotto creamy and full of flavour, mixed berry compote and ice-cream to die for! All in all great value, great lunch.

I was in on Saturday afternoon for a meal with my uncle. Service was great, food was amazing as always, nice bit of craic about the place. Would definitely go back.

Not bad for a pint but I didn't really rate the food. They do give you loads of free crusty bread but they also gave my mate a day and a half sitting on the pan after he took on the mussels.

This traditional pub does good beer and good food at a decent price. Often hard to get a table, which I guess is a testament to its quality. The toilets are indeed pretty horrible, but who cares?

Love this place. Food is excellent and as other reviews have said, the atmosphere is great. Ideal on cold winter's day. Occasionally service is a bit slow but didn't detract from experience.

They say you should judge a place by there toilets if this is the case I would not like to see inside their kitchen.

1. Rude staff with attitude.

2. Filthy toilets (Male & Female)

3. If you like frozen oven chips amd mashed garden peas with everything it should be ok for you!
