Well, I must disagree wth the other review written by "A Curry Fan" slightly...

They are definitely right that the food is great and the service very friendly. It truly is also a family business and this comes across in the friendly, laid back attitude of the staff.

I had lamb jalfrezie, which was hotter than I would normally expect a jalfrezie to be. But it did warn me on the menu, so I certainly can't complain about that. It tasted excellent.

But I wouldn't rave about the atmosphere. The lighting's too bright and they have this nasty trolley thing going around that they stack the dirty plates on. Definitely not a nice touch! I would hardly say it's a hidden gem either - it has a very prominent frontage on St Leonard's Street - one of the main arteries into the centre of town from the south!

They don't have a license and soft drinks seem to be poured from bottles (I had a slightly flat glass of "Coke"), so I would definitely recommend taking your own drink - it's only 50p per person.

This is how an Indian restaurant should be - truly wonderful food served in the friendliest and most welcoming atmosphere imaginable. A real family business from the waitresses to the chefs, you'll not regret seeking out this hidden gem for a single second...

...well, unless you opt for a meal containing the world's hottest chili pepper, the Naga Jolokia...

This is my local resteraunt / takeaway. The family are so welcoming and the food is just fantastic, you can watch the head chef cook and you can tell that he takes pride in each curry that he makes. Not like your usual curry houses that use purees and powders, you can actually see fresh ingredients being but into your curry, fresh green chillies, fresh garlic cloves and tomatoes. The family being so welcoming makes the atmosphere in the resteraunt the way it should be. The trolly that the previous rating is referring to is used to bring your whole meal to you and is not a negative by any means.

I recently spoke to the head waiter about the previous rating and he says they now use cans of juice instead of bottles, so a great example of them acting on feedback. But seriously, you must go try the food to believe how good it is.

I was down to Edinburgh on a midweek break last week and by good fortune the first Indian takeaway service I called at was closed. I had walked past the Kismot earlier in the day and, as it was convenient, I and my family decided to walk to it and sample their menu. From the moment the door opened we were treated fantastically and the mouthwatering smells from the viewable kitchen were wondrous. We soon ordered our meals and wandered home where we gorged ourselves on the truly fantastic meals. Very high quality for not a lot of dosh and worth every penny. So pleased were we that we returned the next evening for another 4 different dishes. If this is normal standard for Edinburgh then you are very lucky, but I suspect that this superb eatery is far beyond the vast majority. Go seek it out for it is only a 10 minute walk from the heart of Edinburgh.

Went to this restaurant tonight (13/08/09) on the recommendation of the reviews on this website. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was very good and the lighting was just right contrary to the views of an earlier reviewer. The trolley behaved impeccably! Would highly recommend a visit to this establishment and when back in Edinburgh again will certainly do so ourselves.
