Designer Italian dining in the heart of the old town
![]()
The Missoni Hotel opened on the corner of George IV Bridge and the Royal Mile in June of this year to much media fanfare. The first of a series of hotels planned in cities worldwide by the famous Italian design house, this 5 star hotel makes a great impact in the heart of Edinburgh's world heritage site.
Predictably, the hotel's restaurant is Italian, and towards the upper end of the market. The restaurant looks fantastic, located on the first floor of the hotel, overlooking the foyer/bar area. The Missoni design input is evident throughout, from the light fittings and furniture to the waiters' t-shirts and crockery and cutlery.
Service is impeccable, yet relaxed and friendly. Just as you would hope it would be when you pay between £20-£30 for a main course. To start we had a plate of mixed cooked meats and melon with prosciutto. Solid, tasty, classic Italian starters executed well. I had saddle of lamb for main. The meat, was great, but perhaps the waiter could have advised I add a side order, as the dish felt incomplete as it was. My dining partner had a prawn risotto. The pasta and risotto dishes are available as small and large and are very competitively priced meaning that a meal at this stunning restaurant in a new 5 star hotel in the centre of the city can still be enjoyed on a budget.
The desserts we unmemorable, but satisfactory. The complimentary biscotti at the end of the meal were a nice touch and very gratefully received.
Undoubtedly this restaurant will be very popular during the festival due to its location and the reputation that the hotel has already gained. Go, and you will not be disappointed, but if you plan to have 3 courses, coffee and wine, prepare to pay in excess of £50 per person.

I went here today for a work lunch, having been for drinks a few times I was keen to know what the food was like. The deco is all very Italian as you would imagine with the whole restaurant/hotel being decked out in MIssoni decor. The restaurant was very quiet (although it was a Tuesday) with their only being 2 other tables in.
The menu is quite limited but what they do have all sounds amazing - we didnt go for a starter but the table near us has them and they did look very good sized portions. For main I had the swordfish which came with a cherry tomato and rocket salad and I have to say it was amazing. A very good sized portion and was cooked perfectly - it was £17. Others had the liver (£19) and lamb (£18) and they said that they were also very good. The other dishes did need some side orders which you can get for £2-3.
As the main reviewer says this is good food but you need to be prepared to pay for it. Luckily we werent paying ;)
