La P'tite Folie, 61 Frederick Street, EH2 1LH, Edinburgh

I ate here a couple of weeks ago with my friend and, overall, I was very impressed with this little French eatery.

Based on Frederick Street, I was apprehensive that it would be another of those city centre, fine dining, overly expensive types of places… but it wasn’t like that at all.

As soon as we went through the door, a pleasant waitress approached us and showed us to our seats by the window. Although it was very quiet (it was a week night and quite early that we dined) there was a nice atmosphere and the menu choice was both varied and well priced. My dining partner had tempura prawns to start which I also tasted, they were very good and had a hummus/avocado sauce which was very filling for a starter.

For a main, we were slightly boring and both opted for a steak but it was one of the best steaks I have had for a long time… it came with a large portion of fries, veg and a tasty peppercorn sauce.

I was not aware, however, that the best was still to come… for desert, we both went for the crème brulee. When it arrived, it was huge! I am well aware that big isn’t always better (!) but it was SO good – exactly how I would expect the perfect crème brulee to taste. Needless to say, I was absolutely stuffed when we had finished eating.

After a couple of liqueur coffees, a bottle of wine (and 2 gin & tonics), 2 mains, 2 deserts and 1 starter our bill came to a total of approximately £80. Not bad, considering both the food and service was impeccable.

I will definitely return and would encourage anybody to give La P’tite Folie a try!

I like this place. Decked out with black and white photos, it just seems to have Parisian feel (granted I may have been sucked in by the name!). The service is always good, the portions generous and the menu is excellent on its own but the specials are also abundant. There is also a good selection of wine.

I have always found the price to be very reasonable for an evening meal, but went there for a lunch and found it to be almost cheap, and while the menu had obviously been down sized there was still a good variety.

There is another restaurant in the chain located in the West End in a more elegant and larger tudor building, I found that this some how detracted from the more intamate feel of this restaurant.

Apart from saving my skin on Valentine's (and I do appreciate that), this restaurant has been great on both occasions that I have been (a few years between them).

The staff were genuinely helpful and offered great help with choosing the right wine to marry the dishes we had ordered - not just upselling something from 'the bottom of the list'. The flavours were great and we were afforded the time to enjoy them, even on Valentine's. You can't ask for more than that.

The place has a nice atmosphere and decor to match, and when you see the bill at the end I wouldn't be surprised if you book another table with them right away.

Went for a quick lunch here last week and it was pretty good. At £9 for two courses it is good value and the food was nice and good quality, although I've only given it 4 stars as I found the place a little uninspiring. Nevertheless I'd recommend it for lunch.
