Lai Thai, 23 Brougham Place, EH3 9JU, Edinburgh
We went to Lai Thai last night after a movie at the Cameo. The restaurant is not that big and I have seen reviews that label the decoration as being a little too close to kitch but I have to disagree. I did not find it overpowering or gawdy at all. Anyone who has been to Thailand would find it rather subdued in fact!
The staff were friendly but not overly so. I never understand why at some restaurants the staff insist on placing the napkins on your lap (this is one of those places folks) I find it uncomfortable every time! Otherwise the service was prompt.
Onto the food. We shared duck spring rolls as a starter. Cute little friend rolls arrived with a sweet dipping sauce. They were piping hot freshly fried and nicely spiced with black pepper. For our mains we had king prawn panang curry, honey glazed chicken and some fried rice noodles. The curry was nicely spiced but not overly so with the coconut milk evening it out. I could distinctly taste the kaffir lime and other spices which was a nice change to the other places I have been to in Edinburgh. The chicken was ok. I am not a huge fan of chicken breast but this one was nicely cooked and not dry as you sometimes get. They flamed it at the table which was a nice touch.
There are other touches to the place that bring it a step above some other Thai joints and even some other European restaurants. Nice tableware and beautiful glasses. Everthing has a Thai touch including the delightful silverware. I could have done with more variety in music as I thought they played the same background Thai song over and over. But it was played softly so was not a big problem until I left and had the tune in my head!
For dessert we shared a banana fritter served with coconut ice cream. Different than the fritters you get at the Chinese places, this was a tiny banana coated in coconut and deep fried. The coconut ice cream was filled with toasted coconut and really tasty.
Highly recommended - classy Thai food, staff, and decor.

Went out for dinner for two and had a wonderful time. The food was wonderful, the service was very prompt and the décor was inviting. When we left I suddenly discovered a lot more people had come in since we had - the acoustics were obviously so good that I hadn't heard them. As for the staff - we were served by two beautiful young Thai ladies who struck the just right balance of attentiveness and friendliness.
Highly recommended.

We have been to Lai Thai twice now and loved it both times. We stumbled across it one Saturday night and found it to be a wonderfully welcoming restaurant with superb food. It was so good infact that we decided that we just had to write a review! We would highly recommend a visit to this restaurant and we will be going back regularly!
