This place is a bit hit and miss - it can be excellent and it can be quite mediocre. Like most chippies, if your fish is cooked to order then it's good but if it has been sitting under the heat lamps on the shelf for a while it tends to be a bit dried out and overcooked. Chips are good, but not spectacular. Staff are friendly and pleasant and the range of wines is great for a chippie (but then this is the New Town). They do ice-cream as well if you really want to smash through your recommended daily calorie intake in one meal! Some good daily specials like squid in spicy batter. On balance though unless I really feel like fish and can be sure that it will be cooked to order, I would rather go next door to Anima (owned by a member of the same family) for a Rustic Tuscan pizza - no other pizza though as they have been too greasy and dissapointing and pasta I can make at home. Often touted as the best chippie in town but I think they have rested on their laurels a bit and not up to the standard of the new(ish) Tailend on Leith Walk.

I cannot believe I'm writing the first review of this established award-winning place. How did that happen?
The fish and chips are as good as it gets, but when you add battered mushrooms or prawns, you really get the idea that this is a chippy that's a cut above. The staff are nice too.
Let me just say that if I try to explain to someone where I live, all I have to say is opposite the L'Alba D'oro and people say, "Ohhhhh"

I left a review on anima so I decided I better leave one on their sister company! Amazing fish and chips, fresh and crispy! Even though the food's amazing nothing beats the banter from owner Philippo Crolla at the weekends!
