Cafe St Honore, 34 NW Thistle Street Lane, EH2 1EA, Edinburgh

I went to this restaurant for lunch today (we had actually planned to go to Centotre but it was full). Luckily we were able to walk in here and get a table straight away. I have heard quite a lot about this place so was keen to try it out and see what the food was like.

The menu has about 5 different options for each course which is perfect (not too many options to mull over). All the starteres ranged in price from about £6-8, I ended up going for the shrimp on brown bread with tartare sauce. The starter was amazing, just tasted so fresh and was very good, perfect quantity for a starter as well. For a main I had pasta with courgette and tomatoes with blue cheese which was nice but to be honest I think the blue cheese completely overpowered the rest of the dish. This may be because I am not a huge blue cheese fan though rather than down to the dish. My colleague had the lamb stew and again he said it was slightly disappointing compared to the standard of the starters.

For 2 courses and 2 soft drinks the bill came to £48. If I am honest although the food was nice I dont think I would recommend this place or rush back. It seems to have lost a bit of its frenchness and has more of a Scottish slant. If you are looking for a good French restaurant to go to then I would recommend going to Lescargot Bleu on Broughton Street which is brilliant and very traditional.

I have been meaning to try out this French restaurant for ages and finally got round to going with my parents for their wedding anniversary about a month ago.

First impressions were good - service was friendly and it has a nice, intimate atmosphere. The food was a little disappointing - my brother and I had the fish and chips which was fine but nothing special (the portion, however, was generous). My parents both went for a beef dish which, on the contrary, was delicious and cooked in a tasty sauce.

For deserts we had banoffie pie (I think) and crumble - both of which were fine.

The bill, with a couple of starters, 4 mains, 4 deserts and a couple of bottles of wine came to just short of £100 which was pretty reasonable but, if my memory serves me correct, I think my Mum may have had some sort of discount voucher.

Overall, I was a little disappointed but I think this is mainly because I had very high expectations. I would probably eat here again but, if given the choice, I would recommend that you go to neigbouring Cafe Marlayne instead (another French restaurant but a more varied menu and better food).

You could be in Paris with the wonderful decor of this hidden-away little gem. Whenever I come home to Edinburgh I take folk here - and they're always impressed! You'll need to book at weekends though and definitely during the Festival.

We went here a couple of months ago for our anniversary dinner and it was a very disappointing experience, after the previous time we had visited a year or so ago. The waitress was surly and didn't show us to our table, just pointed in the general direction after leaving us standing in the middle of room before they decided we were worth their attention.

We then sat drinkless at our table for ages and had to grab their attention to serve us a drink whilst we read the menu.

Starters were good, my vension main was overdone after asking for it rare. After our deserts we were completely forgotten about, and again had to chase down the staff for service, and to pay the bill.

I would not rush back and was very let down after having such a lovely meal there previously.

Being a fan of the dine around Edinburgh deal and of Cafe St Honore, my partner and I were looking forward to our meal there last week. We have had many dine around deals all of which have been excellent, therefore we were very disappointed to say the least at what we were served up last Thursday. The starters were of a very high standard, but the food that was passed off as lamb hot pot was very poor. We each had no more than three bits of meat, 90% of which were fat. The bread was served 10 minutes after the soup but in the end that was a blessing as it helped fill the gap left by the poor main course. We will not be back.

Cafe St Honore has always been my favourite French restaurant until a visit 18 months ago which was disappointing. To give it the benefit of the doubt, I went again last night with my partner and was again disappointed. 3 different servers, paid nearly £30 for a bottle of wine and had to pour it ourselves, likewise no-one seemed to bother about topping up your glasses with water. Biggest disappointment now is value for money - or lack of it. Used to get lovely side dish of vegetables but now there's none to be seen. When paying average of £8 for starter and £20 for a main course (both of which were nice but on the small side), it shouldn't be too much to ask for side of vegetables. Noticed they seem to be linked to Blue and Atrium now so could be changed hands. Real shame that such a nice little restaurant has now priced itself out of the market. I for one won't be giving it any more benefit of the doubt and will take my business and cash elsewhere.

We have been to this place 4-5 times over the past year, but noticed the last couple of times the standard in the food has slipped. It's often over salted (steak pie) or cold. However, the 'budget' menu is good value for midweek meal in town. The service could be better along with the standard of the toilets.

Fantastic, friendly and efficient restaurant tucked way from the bustling Edinburgh streets. Perfect price, portions and food.
