Bruntsfield has been lacking a really good restaurant and this brand new place certainly fits the bill. I went there last night and had their specials; Cauliflower and stilton soup followed by Bavette de beouf. It certainly did not disappoint. The soup was lovely, thick and creamy and the beef came in a red wine sauce with shallots and mashed potato.
The service was very discreet, just what you want in a sophisticated restaurant. You may be wondering what I mean by discreet; I mean friendly, but not overbearing. So why didn't I just say that? I don't know, I just didn't.
Anyway, this is a lovely little restaurant and I would recommend it to Bruntsfield locals as well as folk from across the city. It would be a great first date venue, or any date come to think of it.

Le meilleur restaurant Francais d'Edimbourg!
Yes it is the best French restaurant in Edinburgh if not in Scotland!
We went there Saturday night and although being really busy the service was top quality. Nice, efficient and friendly.
We chose the £24 - 3 course - menu (there is another one at £19 or you can order a la carte) and a bottle of wine for £17
I think that £70 for two is fair for such quality food.
The portions are big. For starters we had smoked salmon with salmon mousse and salade mixte with dried meats, a great start. For mains we went for Entrecote sauce Béarnaise and Duck with Apricot-Rhum sauce, fantastic! Meat perfectly cooked too!
For dessert we had Ile Flottante and an amazing Lavender Crème Brulée. Never had that before and was a bit reticent but now I'm looking forward to more!!!
I am French myself and tried most Edinburgh restaurants and that's the only one that made me feel like back home. My partner is English and she truly loved the whole experience too.
Go and try it, honestly, you'll go again and again.

Le Mouton noir is superbe! delicieux, fantastic, merveilleux!
I am French... I love my french food, but not just any!
David has brought to the area a wonderful little heaven of France, the food is very very tasty and his menu offers a great choice of French dishes that you do not find in otherwise more traditional French restaurants in Edinburgh.
Very nice indeed needless to say that we have been a few times already... paupiettes de veau, rack of lamb with minty mash... last time we discovered yet another dish and it was divine!!!
Last thing, the desserts... hummm very lovely, I must mention the Tarte aux pruneaux, my favorite!
I have sent a lot of my customers from the guest house to have dinner @ le Mouton noir, a little advice: book in advance as it is very busy, bon appetit!

This place is the black sheep, and for a reason. As a local I've walked past here on several occassions and I booked here with high expectations but left very disappointed.
Starters good, good selection of wine - if not overly pricey. The major disappointment came when the mains arrived. My partner had the moules marinere, which were good but not the standard we expected. My dish was appalling. I ordered the duck and ostrich. My advice to those who visit, don't! This was a bland, badly seasoned dish. The meat was lovely, but the sauce had no flavour.
I can cope with bad food, what I can't cope with is an argument with the waiting staff. At no point during the mains did the staff enquire on the standard of the food. When clearing the table I informed him about my meal. I received no apology and was essentially told "tough luck". This is not the customer service I would expect here. You win some, you lose some. But the black sheep has lost my potential regular custom.
I went to the restaurant on the basis of the reviews on this site. My advice would be, if you go don't expect it to be amazing but expect to be ripped off! Expensive and not worth it.

I went and had a 3 course lunch for £10.90. I started with chicken liver salad, which was excellent. Then I followed with roast leg of lamb and mashed potatoes. The lamb was perfectly cooked, just pink, juicy and plenty of it too. The potatoes were creamy, light and delicious. I then had the apple tart tatin which again was delightful. Not the cheapest lunch set menu in Bruntsfield, but by far the best quality. The specials board is written all in french, which personally, I'm pleased about - it's authentic French food for sure and I'd recommend it to anyone who's a foodie.

Compact menu with veggie option. Quail starter near perfect, rack of lamb sublime. Mussels OK (ones on top were cool), king scallops (she had two starters) were nicely presented. Chilean Chardonnay well chosen and reasonably priced. House Merlot OK. Service efficient with pleasant informed manner. And all for less than £60!

This restaurant is a little gem - up there with the best french restaurants in Scotland (of which I have visited many). I had the snails to start which were exceptional - probably the best I've ever had. For main course I had the Duo of Duck, which was really well cooked and the flavours were delicious, although the sauce was very sweet and there was a little too much (but I'm being picky). The desserts were good though my girlfriend thought that the Tarte Tatan could have been better. I had the Lavender Creme Brulee which I'd highly recommend. The restaurant also had some great wine. Muscadet is a good white and Brouilly is a fantastic red if you're looking for tips! Service was perfect.
Prices are reasonable for the quality of food and service.

This is the best restaurant in Edinburgh! I've been twice and on both occasions the food was authentic and top quality. The food is quite rich (typically French) and so you may find you don't need dessert. This would be a shame though as the 3 crème Brulee option is a real treat. Service is top-notch. You're best to book as it's very popular (though the first time I visited they managed to squeeze us in). A good place to impress visitors.
