I have to admitt that I dined at Malmaison on a special offer - two courses for two people plus a bottle of wine for £30. This sounds like a pretty great deal but I left disappointed.

I accept that even when they put on special deals restaurant have to look to make a profit, however, the deals are also a marketing tool to show off the restaurant to customers such that they return for a full price meal.

The menu which was offered under the deal was very limited - the mains were what you would expect to see on a pub menu not a restaurant, e.g. sausage and mash, haggis neeps and tatties, all very disappointing. I ordered pigeon for starter - one of the few interesting dishes on the menu. The portion which I was served was tiny - 3 tiny slices of breast - so little in fact that I could barely taste it. For main I had the haggis, which was pleasant, but, well, haggis that any self-respecting Scottish person could have cooked with their eyes shut.

Finally, I got the impression that, as a resuly of dining there on a deal, the staff treated us like second class diners, which I suppose was true to a certain extent. But what is the point of doing special offers if the food and service is so disappointing that people are put off the restaurant entirely?

Service was shambolic. With a practically empty restaurant we were given the table by the doorway with people continually walking pass and an uncomfortable breeze. We did move with no problem but a good manager would never have positioned us there in the first place. Both the drinks and food order were messed up but eventually after several conversations with three different members of staff it was sorted out. However the food is very good. It’s locally sourced and well presented. Do not however have the house salad (Main £12). This was delivered in a glass bowl just like the ones you used to get free with soap powder back in the seventies and comprised of various types of lettuce including rocket, cherry tomatoes, croutons and four “squiggles” of soft cheese. This was nothing more that a side salad supersized. Malmaison place needs a manager that is capable of directing his staff and giving them specific roles rather than letting them all run around encroaching on each others territory. There are far better dining experiences to be had in Edinburgh.

Beautiful building, excellent location, tasteful decor. Unfortunately our burgers were delivered almost an hour late, and one was cold. Other guests reported a 45min delay on a soup order which was also delivered cold. Dreadful. We didn't complain, mainly because we were too weak with the hunger by that point, and the staff had that slow walking slow talking look of not giving a damn anyway. We dropped in on a lunch meet-up, so returned late to work, unsatisfied and and considerably less well off as the burgers were over £11 each, which might have been acceptable had they been delicious, hot and on time. Not a lot to ask for really.

Prix fixe lunchtime menu is a delight and the price is great too. Beautiful reastaurant in a great little corner of Leith.

Hotel is fab for a high-end city break.

Did £30 deal for two - could choose anything from main menu and it includes both wine and coffee. So the deal appears to be an improvement on experiences previous reviewers left.

The wine choice was really outstanding for the quality of bottle we chose and that was also a plus.

Left happy and full.

It is a really nice restaurant.

We dined at the restaurant on the 12/09/2009, the service was terrible (sat with empty glasses, had to go through to the bar myself). When the food eventually arrived the portions were small and nothing special (£8 for three tiny scallops). The main course arrived 40 minutes later poor quality and badly cooked steak and lukewarm lobster thermidor. Although we had apologies the manager had no explanation and waived the bill. There are far too many great restaurants in the area for us to ever go back.

Malmaison, 1 Tower Place, EH6 7DR, Edinburgh

Lovely food, laid-back but friendly attentive staff, mags and newspapers available, comfy seats, music not too loud - just plain nice funky surroundings, which is what you want at the weekend.

Choice of food in the bar or in the restaurant (or outside) - we had a fab lunch yesterday in the bar (less formal than the restaurant), and I chose the Eggs Benedict - but I think the "large" one with four eggs would defeat anyone. My partner had the Mal Burger and it was delicious (+ he ate egg No 4) - but there were plenty of his chips left over for me to munch on. Parking's not the easiest, but it's well worth a wee trawl around to abandon the car. The coffee's good too. The feeling of luxury in the Malmaison gives an inviting atmosphere, and you don't feel pushed to leave before you want/need to. Worth a visit for your leisurely brunch/lunch. Also great for an informal business meeting as it's quiet enough to have a proper discussion and the tables are big enough for paperwork/laptops. We'll be back regularly :-)
