Meadowood Cafe, 15 Bread Street, EH3 9AL, Edinburgh

When I stumbled upon Meadowood I really thought I was stumbling upon a little gem of a place. When I had time to grab something before a movie at the filmhouse, I realized that many others have also discovered this place! It was lunch and a busy one at that. The small place was completely packed out and the staff were running about in the tiny space that allowed it. The menu is half bubble teas, milk and plain, with or without pearls. It was the first time I have seen a place in Edinburgh serving these Taiwanese(?) drinks. I was tempted before I saw the price! Having spent time in Taiwan and regularly treating myself to one of these drinks I rarely paid over 50p. Here the drinks are all priced over 2.50! Even for just soy milk! Next time I will splurge.

The rest of the menu is dim sum, dumplings mostly, a selection of soups, with noodles and without, and bento type boxes. I went for the mixed dim sum selection which were just a vartiety of dumplings - 10 in all. They were all meat but I am not sure this is always the case as they do have veggie dumplings. The dumplings were fresh that I amsure of but were a little lacking in flavour or this may be because I had to scarf them all down before I ran to the movie. They were moist and there was a selecton and came with dumpling sauce, the brown kind, and sauce the spicy kind and this sauce was also a bit sweet, more like the thai style sweet chilli sauce.

Think I will visit with friends in tow next time to try some of the soups and give the dumplings more time. And I will go for the milk tea.

Where do I begin? I adore the Meadowwood! I love its informal, cafe style and welcoming atmosphere. The menu is varied, with a number of Taiwanese dishes nestled in amongst Thai and Chinese offerings. The fried chicken soup noodles are my firm favourite - and my inclusion of this fact is probably going to give the game away as to my not-so-secret identity if the staff ever read this! ;)

The dim sum are fantastic: moist little parcels of heaven served in bamboo steamers. The spring rolls are crisp and crunchy. The different varieties of soups, noodle and rice meals are tasty and healthy - I always feel very virtuous having dined here! A special mention has to go to the HUGE juice and smoothie menu: these are amazing. I have recently become addicted to soya milk and pearl milk tea, all thanks to the Meadowwood cafe. :)

Ah, the Meadowood. My friends and I first stumbled upon it inbetween movies during the 'Dead by Dawn' horror film festival as we needed some food in our bellies. Five(ish) years later, most of us still visit it frequently - and my fiancee (Ishkhara, whom also frequents this very site) is now a big fan.

It's a small place which serves a variety of Chinese/Taiwanese/Thai dishes alongside a substantial soft drinks menu. We visited it earlier today, so this is my first attempt at sounding like a 'foodie' by writing my first review on this here site. So... Er, here goes!

T'was a cold December afternoon. The wind was a'howlin' and the rain was batterin' off the deck. We, er.. 'Parked' on Spittle Street and walked past the shanties (ok, I'll stop the random Pirate speak now, yarr?) towards the Meadowood. We'd never been there for about six months - which is a record by our standards - but we generally knew what to expect.

Once we'd settled down and studied the now-familiar menu we decided to go for the Dim Sum combo for starters. I ordered the Pork Steak soup noodles for my main while my better half ordered her favourite; the Fried Chicken soup noodles. I decided to order a Banana and Vanilla smoothie from the drinks menu, which offers a dazzling variety of freshly squeezed/mashed fruit drinks and smoothies, pearl milk teas and your usual fizzy soft drinks.

Whilst waiting for the food to arrive it's easy to spot the Meadowood's weak spots... The decor is starting to look rather shabby, the fruit-torture devices are very loud and, if truth be told, parts of it look like they could be much cleaner; such as the toilet. It's also quite common for the food to take a while to arrive - and today was no different. But we forgive it for these small problems when the food is so good.

The Dim Sum are always beautifully tasty and come served in a steaming box. They have some tasty chilli sauces and soy sauce for dipping those dim sum's in, too. After we'd devoured them, there was a wait of about 15 mins until our main courses arrived. My soup noodles were piping hot and the pork steak (which is served on a separate plate) was delicious. Due to the size of the portions it can often be difficult to finish the entire bowl, so I was finally defeated and felt guilty for leaving some of the soup and noodles.

So, all in all a pretty damn good lunch. It weighed-in at just over £20 which represents really good value for money, too. The high amount of Chinese/Asian customers is also a good sign that the Meadowood is suitably authentic - and if it's good enough for them...
