I was slightly disappointed when I went to Monteith's for dinner one night last week. I had heard only good reviews but my partner and I were disappointed in our main courses and, considering the price, I would be hesitant to return. I went for the lamb which was lacking in taste, small and poorly presented whilst my partner had the duck which was slightly over-cooked and, again, lacking in the taste department.
This is a shame as our starters and sticky toffee pudding, on the other hand, were delicious.
Service was good: our waitress was efficicent and friendly without being OTT.
Atmosphere is also good, I like the dimmed lights and open-lit fire. Perhaps they have crammed a few too many tables into a small space, however, as we felt that we could hear other diners' conversations a little too easily.
It is a shame that our main courses in Monteith's were disappointing as I would have definitely returned. Considering the price, however, I won't be doing so anytime soon.

We ate at Monteith's on Sunday afternoon around 5pm.
I was our first time and we found the place really beautiful. Nevertheless, the music was really loud and inappropriate (loud hip-hop) for a chilled Sunday afternoon in a nearly empty restaurant.
As a starter we had Walnut and blue cheese salad (£3.95) and Pork Belly on choucroute (£4.50). Salad was average and Pork belly was undercooked so very very fat. Quite disgusting. Bread was not served/included so we had to order it but arrived by the end of the starters, thus too late. No butter comes with the bread.
Our mains were: Smoked haddock, Stornoway black pudding and poached eggs on potatoes, and Wood Pigeon with lentils, bacon and chorizo salad. Both were about £14 but both tasted too strong so hard to finish.
We had to ask for a steak knife for the wood pigeon. Again the service was not great.
At last we left our mains unfinished and the waiter asked us if we wanted a look at the dessert menu and we agreed. Ten minutes after that menu was given, no order came so we went to pay at the bar and left.
Not impressed...

I am mixed on Monteiths. I have eaten here twice now and I love the look and feel of the place, the selection of drinks, the friendliness of the staff and the tucked away location.
The food has also been good, on the latest occasion an excellent value and great tasting steak sandwich for Sunday lunch. The previous time I enjoyed a variety of dishes shared amongst the table, particularly good were the sausages and the black pudding mash which was fantastic!
However both times I have been in there has been something to infuriate me and sadly drops this review from 4 stars to 3...
First time the service was pretty slow and on receiving the dishes my dining partner's poached egg still had a quarter of the egg shell on it, which is just tardy on the part of the kitchen. Second time round this past weekend the service was so slow it hurt, taking about half an hour to get the (admittedly good) food to our table, then taking an equally painfully long amount of time to collect the dishes and give us the bill, at which point we found out that despite it being 2 in the afternoon on a Sunday they still hadn't cleared all the transactions through the card machine so we would have to wait 5 minutes if we wanted to pay for a meal for 5 people on plastic, very far from ideal.
So much potential in here but sadly doesn't seem to have got it quite right yet.

As the lunch menu says lunch is served until 7pm, we booked a table here for 6pm. After reading a review on The List we were a bit worried that lunch was only served until 5pm so, not wanting to pay dinner prices (as it seemed expensive for what it was), we phoned to check. We were told lunch was only served until 5pm so we were going to cancel but was then informed that on Sundays they actually do a brunch menu all day so we kept our booking. When we arrived we were presented with the (expensive) dinner menu. When we asked about the brunch menu they told us it was only served until 5pm. After explaining that we had been told it was the brunch menu all day they let us look at it but there was no Sunday roast or sausage and mash (the only reasonable items on the brunch menu) so we decided just to leave. Might be really nice food but we never found out. From first impressions it seemed nice for lunch/brunch but the dinner menu seemed very expensive for the surroundings (it can't decide whether it's a bar or restaurant).

Four of us ate here last night. All three courses were wonderful. The filet of beef melted in your mouth. We shall return soon. Very good chef. One negative point was that we did not think that the music was appropriate for the restaurant. Softer music would be more apt and perhaps changing over to the "bar" music at 10/10.30pm. As the restaurant is very small and cosy one would need to book.

We ate in here last night and was pretty disappointed by the food and service. I had the clear soup broth to start and it was very bland, followed by the fish which although was quite tasty was overcooked with undercooked vegetables. My partner had the fois gras which he enjoyed but his duck was extremely overcooked. The service was friendly and attentive to start but we sat with our main plates in front of us for a good 15 minutes before being taken away, never to see the waitress again. Nobody asked if we wanted deserts or coffees. Certainly won't be returning!

I was really looking forward to eating here but was very disappointed. I had the scallops en croute to start which game served between two shells sealed with a bit of dough - not quite what I was expecting but maybe that's just me being thick! The scallops were nicely cooked but the chilli jam they came with was very bitter and not complementary to the dish. My friend didn't like her foie gras either, but perhaps both of these issues were just down to personal taste. We were really looking forward to our main course having both ordered the smoked haddock with black pudding and poached egg. The waitress even mentioned that it was her favourite. It may well have been lovely if it hadn't been completely over cooked - either that or sat under heat waiting to come out (no excuse for this though as only 3 tables were occupied). It was a shame as the pommes anna were lovely but the haddock was like rubber, inedible I thought, and the poached egg was cooked right through. Some nice flavours but it was ruined by the texures. I don't know if it was a different chef from usual but either way I don't think I'll be going back, which is a shame.

I have eaten at Monteith’s twice now, and on both occasions have been delighted by delicious food and excellent service. Most recently, I visited for a celebratory lunch with two good friends. I booked online through EdinburghMenus.com using toptable – an excellent function that takes the time and hassle out of booking a restaurant. We ordered a bottle of Prosecco to drink at the bar and received complimentary strawberries on ice – a classic example of how this restaurant goes that little bit further to make your experience more pleasurable. The lunchtime menu is unbelievably good value: 2 courses for £8.95 or 3 for £10.95. The Monteith’s Benedict is one of the tastiest dishes I have eaten in a long time. The evening menu is naturally more expensive, but complimentary mise en bouche makes you feel you are getting an even fairer priced meal. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and plan on returning very soon.
