No. 1 Sushi Bar, 37 Home Street, EH3 9JP, Edinburgh
Hearing good things about the No.1 Sushi Bar from Edinburgh Menus, I was really looking forward to trying it, and it did not for one monent disappoint.
I could spend an enormous number of words describing the quality and freshness of the food, and the delicate balance of flavours. Safe to say, everything we ordered was excellent and without the slightest inadequacy. The sushi was perfectly formed and fresh, the teriyaki arrived on a lightly sauced bed of thin noodles (as requested) and had a perfect flavour, tenderly cooked, and beautifully presented. I also had scallops, bacon, crab and cheese served in a shell, which was light and a perfectly-sized accompaniment to my main dish. Washed down with a quarter bottle of warm house sake, and I left feeling that I had been treated to an excellent meal which left me warm and full, but not oversly so.
What it is that I loved more than anything about the Sushi Bar was its atmosphere and ambience. This is by no means, as the name itself dictates, a restaurant, but rather a friendly, unasuming bar, where the tables are close together, the staff rush around serving people, and you're just allowed to get on with enjoying the food and the conversation from the company across the table.
The decor is bright and pleasant but has seen better days, although in many ways this adds to the atmosphere. The sushi is freshly prepared at a bar at the front of the shop, with the lighting outside casting a glow on the proceedings that will momentarily make you feel like you're in Japan (although the waitresses did seem to be mostly Chinese rather than Japanese). On an autumn evening you can sit and watch the world go by outside as a plethora of mouth-watering dishes are served to you on a first-cooked first-served basis (don't let the 'starters' and 'main courses' sections of the menu confuse...This is served like tapas, arriving as it is cooked until your table is full, but this, to me, added to the medley of flavours), and then into the Cuckoo's Nest for a couple of glasses of wine before taking in a film at the deceptively wonderful Cameo cinema (by deceptive I mean it's insides are far more luxurious than it's outside would give you to believe).
In fact, Sushi Bar, bar, cinema, all within seconds walking distance of each other really makes this a great evening out after work, and you get to avoid the all-style-no-substance areas in Morningside.
Considering the amount of dishes ordered, the bill was a staggeringly low amount, and it's not often, these days, that when the bill arrives it shocks you...in a good way!
I cannot recommend no.1 Sushi Bar highly enough, although it will not be to everyone's taste. But as you leave, with the bar staff, sushi chef, and watiresseses all bidding you a good evening, you realise that this form of informal-formal dining is done so very well by Japanese restaurants. I will be returning. Often.

It's been a long time since I used chopsticks so my skills were a bit rusty. However, the No 1 Sushi Bar was a delight from beginning to end. We were greeted immediately and taken to the back part of the restaurant and offered a few tables to choose from. We poured over the menus and I mistakenly let my love of sushi take over me and almost ordered one of each! I did order too much though but that didn't stop me from trying to eat it all anyway.
I had vegetable tempura for starters. This was my mistake as there was far more than I expected. However, the batter was light and crispy and the vegetables still had good texture to them. I then had the sushi set (opting for the nigiri option) that came with salmon sashimi and miso soup and then an extra order of tuna sashimi. This was all prepared beautifully and tasted delicious. I wish I was able to idenitfy what some of the fish was as I'd never had some before so wasn't sure which one was which. Anyway, all were yummy.
My partner had chicken teriyaki and I nabbed a tiny taste. This was gorgeous so I might have that next time, even though my love for sushi is strong.

Myself and clockwork.satan met a friend for sushi here at the weekend and I can happily say I was not disappointed. The fish was fresh, the sushi was tasy and the service was laid back enough to allow us to enjoy our meal without feeling crowded, but the waiting staff were there like a shot as soon as you looked ready to order. We decided to each order a main dish and then have a few dishes of sushi to share. My teriyaki chicken yakisoba noodles were lovely, with moist glazed chicken laid on a bed of yummy fried noodles and vegetables. The other half seemed to enjoy his seafood udon noodles, marvelling not only at the taste but at the size of the portions, and our friend enjoyed his tuna rice served with miso soup. The rainbow roll was spectacular and I really enjoyed it, although it wasn't quite as highly flavoured as some of the other dishes. We also had spicy tuna maki, which packed a delightful little kick, and what was the standout sushi dish according to clockwork.satan...the unagi nigiri (barbecued eel).
All in all we had a great meal and the staff were happy to let us take our time to eat and chat. We'll definitely be back, probably sooner rather than later! Next time I want to try the ramen and a sashimi platter...oh, and the sake! :)

This is the second time I go there and I've been delighted every time.
Wine is great.
Service is brilliant.
Portions are massive.
Prices are more than correct.
Taste is fantastic.
Two words: JUST GO!
In more details, you can have a sushi or sashimi mix (8 pieces) with Miso soup for £10. Or a Seafood special rice with Miso soup for £9. Any rice or noodle meal is massive well enough for two or for big appetite. At last my favourite ever are the dumplings.

My other half and I decided to take an impromptu visit to the No.1 Sushi Bar last night. We've been there once before (see Ishkhara's review) and were very impressed so we gave it another go.
Predictably, once again we come out of the place with big smiles on our faces. I seem to have gained an addiction to roasted eel sushi and I can say with 100% certainty that the eel in the No.1 Sushi Bar is by far the best I've had yet. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
We were surprised to find the restaurant so quiet on a Saturday evening during the Fringe, but not long after we arrived it slowly started filling up. We were guided to a table in the back corner of the place (maybe they wanted to hide us away and engorge us with sushi?!) and presented with the rather expansive - but not too expensive - menu. There is a massive amount of sushi dishes on offer here from your usual California Rolls to more exotic Rainbow and Dark Dragon rolls, as well as some interesting choices I've never seen before. After having a small taste of their eel the last time I wanted more, so I ordered some eel nigiri and the roasted eel rice dish. Ishkhara ordered Spicy Tuna maki's and Chicken Teriyaki. Some hot Sake was also a must-have!
The first dish come out to our table within five minutes. This is incredibly quick as it's made freshly at the counter in the restaurant area. We both tucked into the spicy tuna maki's. Absolutely delicious - chewy seaweed, well cooked rice and tuna with a surprisingly strong spicy kick. After a quick dunk in some soy sauce and a dab of wasabi I was in sushi heaven.
Then my eel arrived. Not only did it look beautiful, the sweet smell of the BBQ sauce they smother it in got my belly rumblin'. And the taste? Absolutely astonishing. Trust me - just try this dish. Don't be put off thinking it's going to be slimy or horrible.
My main dish was pretty much more of the same, but with rice. Which made me a happy guy as I'm now addicted to eel! Ishkhara's decided that the chicken Teriyaki she had was probably the best she'd ever had.
All in all, this is a mighty fine establishment. I've got absolutely nothing bad to say about it. We will be going back there. And I will have some more eel. Oh yes. I will.

Went on Saturday night was a great atmosphere in the restaurant. Very busy so you must book ahead especially for a weekend night.
I ordered the deep friend bean curd and the vegetarian California sushi. Downside for me personally was there wasn't much for a veggie to choose from but still very tasty what I could eat and nicely priced.

Sushiya and No.1 Sushi Bar are managed by the same owner or management so most things will be the same. I agree with some of the comments. Personally I prefer the customer service at No.1 (very friendly) but the food isn't as good as Sushiya. The staff are Chinese, but that doesn't affect the standard of food they are producing. The best advice I can offer is, give No.1 Sushi Bar a go and then compare it to the other sushi places.

Totally love this wee place! Have been to quite a few sushi bars in my time and this is one I will definitely be going back to... I was a regular at Sushiya in Dalry, and even though their menus are simlar, No.1 Sushi bar has a lot more on offer and variety. The staff were very friendly (Chinese or Japanese it didn't matter to me!), there was a nice atmosphere and price was about right for fresh sushi, quite reasonable. They call themselves No. 1 and as a customer, I agree! Definitely worth a visit!

After reading the reviews below I just have to leave a review also. I am a very big Japanese food fan and have been to many Japanese restaurants all around the world. The No 1 Sushi Bar was about average. It's true the staff were Chinese as i am also and I could tell this didn't matter though as the Chinese can make great sushi. The decor wasn't the best they could have spent a bit more on that front. But the staff were very friendly and the price wasn't all that bad either. I would say some things were a let down though like the miso soup was obviously from a packet that you can get in every chinese supermarket these days. Also at first the free wasabi peas at the table were great until I saw the waiter put the "unused peas" back in the container which put me off eating them again - think of bar nuts! Overall the place was ok but if you want sushi in Edinburgh you can't really find a great place since they closed YO!! but Sushiya will surfice but remember to book a table there or you won't get one. Either that or go to Glasgow's YO or Ichiban is the closest!!!

My husband and I have been making our way around the Sushi places in Edinburgh and No. 1 is our third stop and so far our favourite. The service was incredibly friendly and polite without being over bearing. The sushi in the Nigiri platter was fresh and well presented. The Dragon roll was the best I have ever had and I would highly recommend it. I agree with a review I read that stated the simple decor leaves the sushi to be the star attraction but there is also a peaceful atmosphere while you're dining. Would highly recommend it.

Couldn't fault this lovely restaurant at all, my partner and I had sushi platter to share and everything was perfect, the fish was very fresh as was the wasabi and ginger, we also had vegetable tempura which was excellent and a lovely glass of house red wine, the waiter was pleasant and very attentive, we have decided that we would go to Edinburgh (which is an hour's drive from where we live) just for this restaurant.

I can't disagree more with the previous reviewer. Who knows if the staff are Chinese or Japanese… does it really matter though? I guess British people should only have restaurants with British food too. They would be popular! Overall I found the restaurant extremely warm, friendly and genuinely homely. The staff were fabulously friendly and the food was amazing. Great value for money too. I’ve had sushi in Australia, HK, NYC and loads of places in Europe and I thought this was pretty much as good as any. I’ve been a few times now and as long as the place doesn’t change I will be a regular for a long time to come!

My wife and I took a cab down to this establishment, and got to say, very fresh sushi, and shrimp tempura was just fantastic. Thank you. Jack and Pam. PB, Florida, USA

Looks nice from afar, but the finish of the decor is not up to usual Japanese restaurant standard. Food is average, and the place has no Japanese staff to speak of! I think all the staff are Chinese! The menu is a copy of another Japanese restaurant in Dalry Road - Sushiya! Right down to the wording and pricing! The layout of the menu has a Chinese takeaway menu feel to it. Strange, shows where these guys background are from. The decor is a cross between Sushiya and Favorit. The miso soup was okay. The sushi was freshly made in the bar area, but the fish was not the freshest that I have had. The tempura and udon was average. Disappointed as they call themselves No.1 but I think they should let the customers vote.
