We ate at Patio after several enthusive comments made by friends and we weren't disappointed. First, don't let the decour put you off; it is rather old school, underground and tiled with what looks like bathroom tiles (sorry!), dark wooden tables and paper serviettes folded into wine glasses! However, the food was delicious and definitely worth going back for. We had 1 starter, 2 special mains, 1 dessert, a coffee, 3 lagers, a coke and a half carafe of wine for £65.

There is an extensive menu showing Italian standards, my boyfriend was particularly pleased that you could have a half portion of pasta to start. However, you probably won't need the menu as the resturant specialises in fish dishes and offers a mind boggling array of daily speacials that the waiting staff relay to you at the table. We both had fish; me, a whole grilled seabass and him, hailbut (huge portion) and it was decious as was the fresh anchovies on toast that my boyfriend had to start. There was a wide selection of desserts all of which appeared to be home made (good sign).

It is a family run resturant with the owner Carmella serving front of house, all the other waiting staff appeared to be Italian. The service was excellent and very friendly.

It makes a lovely change to eat somewhere where the food and service is more important than trendy but sterile surroundings; for once a case of substance over style. I would definitely go back and encourage others to try, athough do make a reservation as it was fully booked all evening on the Friday night we were there.

Just the best family run Italian in Edinburgh. Fantastic hosts and tremendous food.
