If you can't afford the £250,000 required to buy a 1 bedroom shoebox in this recently finished Norman Foster designed block in the new Quartermile development, you can at least pop into this cafe on the ground floor for a coffee. It's a smart little place and the coffee isn't much more expensive than anywhere else. The food is very pricey though - some of the small open sandwiches are over a fiver. Needless to say, I didn't get to find out if they were worth it!

Here for brunch yesterday.
Me - Rocket & pesto Foccacia, 2 cups of coffee, 1 freshly squeezed orange juice.
Partner - Breakfast platter (bread and conserves), 1 cup of coffee, 1 freshly squeezed orange juice.
Total bill around £16-17.
My sandwich was really nice once I got over the £3.80 price; partners Breakfast platter was REALLY good - excellent bread and spectacular marmalade.
Coffee was very nice and (happily) very hot (not always the case I find).
Orange juice was good but nothing that would justify £2.50 a glass.
OK, it's not the City Caff and it's all a bit healthy and wholesome and beardy. And yes, it is full of smug parents with their doubtless "much more intelligent than normal for their age" babies but, once in a while, I'd go again.

Maybe the easiest review I will ever write on here as the good and bad about Peters Yard are so easy. The good is the best coffee in Edinburgh, the fantastic freshly baked bread, the parsnip cake, the sandwiches, the cardoman buns the simple decor. The bad is the location in a vast, greenhouse like cavernous new build office block, the high prices (though compared to the competition it is pretty competitive), and the occasional scrum of morningside mums blocking the place up. The in betweens are the occasional lukewarm coffee and the service which blows a little hot and cold, never bad but sometimes a little on the slow side. Fortunately the upsides far outweigh the bad stuff and this is, in my eyes, possibly the best coffee establishment in Edinburgh.

A sophisticated and fresh addition to Edinburgh's cafe scene, Peter's Yard offers a relaxed 'scandinavian chic' environment in which to wile away the hours.
With an in-house bakery the bread is truly delicious and worth the visit alone. Add to this a wide range of cakes, muffins, treats and some great coffees which are hard to resist.
Quality is of utmost importance in this establishment and evident in all they produce - though does not necessarily come cheap. The bacon and pate sandwich was a real winner and, like all the food on offer, is somewhat different to the offering in your average cafe. It was also nice to see some latte art finally reach Edinburgh and indicates that the staff here are on top of their game.
Good stuff indeed - though at a price.

Sandwiches are expensive but definitely worth it so I treat myself from time to time. For a cheaper option try the soups (they have 2 choices everyday). I get a soup "to go", it comes with 2 large slice of bread (2 different breads as well) so it makes a decent lunch and the price is just over £3.
