Redwood, 33A St. Stephen Street, EH3 5AH, Edinburgh

I went here for dinner at the weekend and was left very impressed by the whole experience. It is a very small and intimate restaurant on St Stephens Street which holds probably no more than 20-25 people at the most. I think they must do separate sittings as we were only able to get a table for 8.30 so it is worth booking in advance.

For started I had soup which was mushroom with roasted mushrooms and a cheese crouton which was very good. The bread and roasted garlic as a side was very nice touch as well! Other people on the table had crab salad which was also very good. For a main I had lamb which white beans - we were warned to start with how they cooked their meat and could then select how you wanted yours cooked. It was cooked to perfection and just the way we had all asked for (ranging from rare to medium), the other main we had on the table were spinach and ricotta dumplings and roasted trout - not much was left from any of the mains which shows how good they were!

Puddings had to be had - as one of us had spied something which they fancied so we all gave in to temptation and went for one. I had the vanilla panna cotta with rhubarb which was very good and not too heavy and the other pudding winner on the table was ginger and chocolate mouse - I managed to sneak a taste when no one was looking and it was amazing!!

Redwood is a great restaurant and I think the location makes it as it fits in so well along St Stephens Street with the other bars etc. It is £26.95 for 3 courses not including wine, or £21.95 for 2 courses so I would save it for a special occasion - I think it is BYOW (£4 corkage) during the week but not on Friday or Saturday so this would obviously bring down the costs slightly. The great thing is they change their menu every 2 weeks so they is plenty of variety - however if you are going with any fussy eaters be wary that the menu can be limited, there is only 3 choices for each course so they may struggle to pick off the menu.

I had an enjoyable meal at Redwood but I left feeling that it was slightly overpriced. I dined there in a large group of about 12 in the lead up to Christmas, as a result of one (or both) of these factors we had to make our choices in advance by the Tuesday when the meal was on Saturday.

I liked the roasted garlic that was provided with the bread - very tasty. For starter I had scallops with cauliflower soup. It should have worked but I was left a little disappointed as the soup was too creamy and it only came with 2 moderately sized scallops.

For the main I had venison with cornbread and a chill sauce (which carried a £4 supplement). The venison was well cooked (pink in the middle) and very tender and the chill and cornbread added an interesting dimension to the dish. The options for desert were not particularly enticing, I think that only 2 or 3 of our party were tempted to have one.

Overall the bill came to about £45 per head including wine. This seamed like quite a lot for the food given that it seemed to me like good home cooking rather than the refined restaurant standard that one would expect for the price, especially seeing as most of us only had 2 courses (and there were only 2 scallops in the soup). Ok, so we did drink quite a bit of wine but I didn't feel that we got value for money. One other small point - the red wine that we were served was a but on the cold side - it should have been at room temperature. This is a minor factor but for the overall price one would expect the restaurant to have things like this taken care of.

Perhaps this is just not my type of food, but I wasn't enthralled with my meal here. Things started off well- the bread and roast garlic was morish and a bit different. But a starter of prawns, rocket and pineapple was no more than the sum of its parts - and with only three smallish prawns on the plate, I felt it rather stingy. While fresh, it felt discordant. Similarly, the main of pork loin with mango salsa didn't do it for me - the pork wasn't particularly well cooked, and the accompaniments- which also included green beens and a poor red wine reduction- were all too acidic and the dish became a chore to finish.

I had the cheese to finish (I think a £2.50 supplement) which were good enough to do without the chutney they came with, being from Ian Mellis.

Overall, I think the issue here is the price - around £27 for my three courses (no booze), I just don't think it was worth it for the level of cooking on offer.

The combinations on the night I was here felt arbitrary and poorly conceived- pineapple and praws? Pork, red wine, mango and green beans? It felt like weight-loss food- joyless and at times insipid. Ive changed my original score from 3 stars to 2 because, after recently having some genuinely excellent meals in Edinburgh for far cheaper, I think I was being far too generous. Alot of people have praised the fact the menu is changed weekly, but wouldnt it be better to change is less frequently (i.e seasonally) and really perfect what is on it? Perhaps I went on an off night, but looking at the most recent menu ("Soy & Chilli Marinated Flank Steak with Basil Pesto served with Warm Sweet Potato, Feta & Spinach Salad" anyone?) it looks like I got off easy. I mean really- basil pesto with soy and sweet potato- is that ever going to work? I wont be back to find out.

Excellent food at a price that seems quite incredible. I always like to get value for money and this place hits the nail on the head.

It's a wee place in Stockbridge that is in one of those basement properties. They do 2 courses for £20.95 and the food I've tasted there for that price point is the best in Edinburgh. First Coast and The Apartment used to be my favourite haunts for casual dining but I've gotten bored with their menus. This place on the other hand actually changes its menu every week. Dunno how they do it.

Anyway the week I went I had the a starter of duck with these tiny little tasty sweet potato pancakes served with a chutney. The combination was absolutely delicious. It's the best starter I'd had in a long long time. I then followed that with a steak that was topped with pesto and came with chard and white beans that were in a mustard dressing.

I would never have thought that this is the sort of food that could fill you up but it certainly filled my appetite and was tasty to boot.

Listening to the people around me I was not alone in thinking that this place is going to really take-off. The other great thing is that there are some great pubs on the street to go visit afterwards.

I'll be keeping my eye on their website to see what other tasty creations the chef will come up with next.

My husband and I ate here last week and the food was fantastic! It was the best-tasting meal I've ever had in Edinburgh -- aside from Martin Wishart's. But the price at Redwood is excellent for the amount of food you get (our bill was just over £50 for 2.5 courses each -- we split a dessert). I highly recommend this small restaurant with a definite neighbourhood feel.

A warm, welcoming, informal restaurant with great friendly service. If you want excellent food well below the price it should be in a non-pretentious environment... book now as I think they will soon have a waiting list...
