Rick's, 55a Frederick Street, EH2 1LH, Edinburgh

Went to Ricks last night with a group of friend again, making the most of the 2 4 1 voucher that unfortunately has now expired.

We had a few cocktails before eating - my Bloody Mary was gorgeous and all the cocktails were beautifully presented.

We didn't have starters but got straight into the mains, I opted for spaghetti carbonara with pancetta and wild mushrooms - it was yummy and very filling. The portion was far too big for me though and I only got half way through - bit of a waste! 3 of my fellow diners opted for the sea bass which looked and smelt delicious, and another went for the duck which again looked great. All portions were pretty big!

We ordered the South African Chenin Blanc and it was a really nice wine, I think it was £14.95 a bottle.

We shared puddings; the special was a chocolate brownie with ice cream which was to die for!

Service was good too but it wasn't a cheap meal - for 6 of us taking into account the 2 4 1 main courses the bill came to £132...

I will go back, seriously like the sound of the Sunday brunch so if anyone has been to that, would love to hear what its like!

I went to the Sunday brunch last weekend and I was soooooooooo disappointed. I was there with a large group - about 10 of us. The restaurant had a few people there but was by no means busy. However they had one ridiculously hungover waitress working and a manager doddering about NOT working from what I could see...

Service was poor. One of my vegetarian dining companions ordered 1 of the 2 vegetarian dishes on the menu - Portobello mushrooms with melted cheese - sounded yummy - only to be informed 'sorry there are no Portobello mushrooms left, the manager just ate the last one for his lunch' Nice.

I had a burnt burger and chips - I had to ask for sauces - these came 20 minutes later once my chips were finished...

We all wanted puddings but had to ask twice for pudding menus. In the end we decided to cut our losses and head to Tigerlily for a chocolate fondue.

A disappointing experience which I'm afraid alters my perception of Ricks as a restaurant. No longer 3.5 - brought down to 2.5

3.5 from Meng (69%) on July 31st, 2008 (10 years ago)

Rick's, 55a Frederick Street, EH2 1LH, Edinburgh

After scouring the reviews for places to eat, the Platinum Blonde approached me with a voucher for 2-for-1 on main meals at Rick's. Was I interested? I had to try. Yes was the answer.

Came 15 minutes early for our 8 o clock booking only to be told that our booking was noted down as being for 8.15. Strange, but no matter. Had drinks. 2 for one? Only on selected items. Pity.

Moving on to our remarkable evening of dinner ,flirtation and conversation the food was ordered. Starters weren't tempting, so we opted for mains each and dessert to follow if there was room. Here's what we had:

Me: Sirloin steak, medium rare, with pink peppercorn sauce, onion and watercress salad in balsamic, with roesti wedges.

Her: Lemon poussin (teenaged chicks all thru' the night) with chilli-oil fried green beans.

Together: Bowl of fries with basil mayo, and dark chocolate truffle tart with creme fraiche and raspberry.

I must say I was left severely underwhelmed by my steak. It *looked* medium rare even after cutting it. Felt a bit cold though, and chewy which is odd. Maybe it's the cut (as sirloin isn't as fatty and flavoursome as other cuts), so for a 17 quid steak I must express disappointment. Still, half-price, so can't complain, eh?

The lemon-drizzled poussin was divine though. Tender, juicy chickenflesh oozing like butter in my mouth. I wish my steak was like that.

Salads, and spuds were good accompaniements. Basil mayo a novelty, but no-show really.

Dessert was excellent, and could've done with a bigger slice.

Service was okay, though spotty at times. It wasn't that busy, but again with a voucher in hand and in mind, and this being less of a blow to my wallet, I'd say the evening went off without a hitch, and would be happy to come back again.

But not for full price. Come armed with a voucher and it's a meal deal steal at Rick's. Pay full price, and gasp in bewilderment why you didn't bring it along in the first place.

Still, I know I'm being harsh. Maybe it'll be different next time round (read jcaughey's review above to contrast and compare). Maybe not.

In conclusion: "Rick's, I think this is the beauty of a friendly beginning." A tentative 3.5 out of 5.

A great little place. I had steak and it was most tasty. The decor is modern and the ambiance is, whilst not overly cosy, convivial to a lovely meal, be it for two or 10! I would strongly recommend this place for a good evening out.

I've eaten here for lunch several times and they do a very good two courses for a tenner option. The staff are friendly (a little casual but in a fun way) the food is tasty - I've had pasta, burgers, cannelloni and sausage and mash and I've enjoyed it all.

A pal of mine had a burger once and wasn't keen but I'm not sure if that was their fault!!!

Overall a nice atmosphere, a decent price and good fare. I'll go again and have no problem bringing people there.

I've not been there at night time so I can't comment but I'm told they will take large bookings.

Been to Ricks plenty of times and is never a let down. Food is always well cooked and tasty, even if the service sometimes lets it down. The lunchtime menu is really good value, and happy hour mojitos are always welcomed!

Burger is well recommended.

Ricks is generally our choice to go when we cant decide what to do!

I am always anxious when restaurants have annexes off the main body of the eatery and set myself up for an evening of neglect.

I am afraid this was one of these occasions.

Ricks is a classic bar serving great cocktails and an interesting and complete wine list, however, the bar element is the strongest feature and the food and table service are poor.

Along with four other tables in this section of the restaurant (who we became quite friendly with after sharing common grumbles about service) each aspect of the dinner from ordering drinks to paying the bill took an extraordinary amount of time.

The excuses were poor also, no customer wants to hear that it is a waitresses first night, training and management should ensure this is not an issue.

As for the food the steaks are good and very well cooked, the starters were a bit tasteless and the fish cakes should be more aptly names potato cakes.

I would not recommend Ricks to my friends for food, but would for drinks. If you do happen to eat there make sure you have some spare time in the diary.

Lunchtime deal is a steal with 2 courses for a tenner and the cocktails (especially the mojitos) are gorgeous - if a bit pricey.

Trendy and laid back with good service and always a bit of a buzz.

Been with family and gfs and never a bad meal yet,

Steaks always perfect, everything's nice, nice feel and look about it, bit pricey but worth the trip definitely. Nice staff and good atmosphere. Only complaint would be fitting 4 round the small table, coped but could have had a bit more space.

Been back several times and plan on returning.
