Enjoyed a great meal in this Indian restaurant upstairs opposite the Festival Theatre last night. We had booked online using EdinburghMenus.com earlier in the afternoon and the system worked perfectly.
We expected it to be really quiet, being a Monday night, but when we arrived at 7 there were already a couple of tables filled including 1 large group. By 9 o'clock the restaurant was almost full!
The descriptions for all the items in the menu are written in Scots which is a novel touch. The hotness of a dish is described in terms of "Nippie" or "Nae ower nippie" which makes a refreshing change!
They've got Cobra on tap which is great and we had a few poppadums to start. We shared a chicken Jalfrezi and asked the waiter to recommend another lamb dish for us. He brought us the chef's special which was very tasty. We also got a complimentary green lentil dish. No complaints about the food at all.
After our coffee the waiter asked if we'd like anything else. We were pretty much ready to leave, but couldn't resist his offer of a complimentary Indian whisky. I'm no whisky fan and I'd say that this Indian stuff tasted no more disgusting than Scottish whisky.
The decor in the place is looking a bit tired and it could do with an overhaul, but that is about the only thing I can find fault with.
Our bill came to about £40 after the tip which was excellent value considering we'd had a few drinks each and more food than we could eat.

I have to say that I was slightly disappointed with a recent meal at Suruchi as their website provides a list of comments from reviews, including from the Independent, "Top 20 Indian Restaurants in the UK". So I was expecting it to be in the Khushis or Voujon class of restaurant but it wasn't quite there.
I think the decoration is tired and outdated, it really could do with a total refit, which I'm sure would improve the atmoshpere. I was slightly surprised at how quiet the place was - I was in a group of ten and there were only a couple of other tables occupied and this was a Friday night. The menu is a bit more interesting than standard Edinburgh curry house offerins, with a good few dishes that I have not seen before.
I have to say that the food was very tasty, although I had a lamb dish (Malabar) and the meat was not particularly tender. On the plus side, they do have Cobra on tap and prices were very reasonable.

Went here on a saturday night. Overall I would say the whole experience was good but nothing special considering there are some other curry places in Edinburgh which really shine (Khukuri for example). The welcome was warm and friendly however and the menu quite interesting and funny - people not familiar with Scots might not have a scoobie about what the menu is on about though but I suppose that can add to the fun!
Overall the food was good but my dish was nothing to write home about. I like mild curries as long as they aer well flavoured and don't just taste like cream. The lamb one I ordered (can't remember name again but had almonds and coconut milk/cream) verged on the slightly too creamy side which just made it taste a bit bland. My husbands dinner got better reviews than mine though - he went for a chicken dish with some nice herbs and spices and a medium/hot (sorry can't remember the name). It looked a bit gelatinous though but by all accounts tasted good. The rice was nice too - just went for the simple pilau rice, something in it made it really yummy. The naan bread was good and the popadoms and chutneys were nice and tasty too.
The staff were attentive and at one point a little too attentive as I thought the man wanted to clear our table and I hadn't finished, he got quite defensive when i said I wasn't done yet. think it was more of a misunderstanding.
Overall not bad, the decor is a bit old but you can't judge a book by its cover and all that and to be honest totally lush surroundings don't really go with curries anyway!
If you're in this area of town and fancy a curry then you may as well give it a shot but I'm afraid there are other places which stand out above it which I would go to first.
Sorry this wasn't a funny review - brain has run out of ideas today.

I must say as an Indian just moved to Edinburgh I have tried every so called Indian restaurant. I don't understand balti (balti means a bucket in India!!!) or any such colonial nonsense that is served in Indian restaurants. Suruchi was great - their starters and sauces were great their vegetarian main courses superb. Can't complain. That is where I go when I am home sick.

I had been to Suruchi Restaurant on 10 May opposite to Festival theatre. The food was excellent and I really liked it.
The menu is written in Scots and the most interesting part was the fusion of Scottish produce cooked in Indian style, like Venison Maharaja or Salmon Feast. Awesome taste.
Value for money is great as well. I had been there with 5 other friends and the bill came up to £70. It was a Saturday night and the restaurant was bustling. Staff were very friendly. Service was top class.
I will surely recommend this restaurant to every curry lover.
