Sushiya, 19 Dalry Road, EH11 2BQ, Edinburgh

My husband and I had dinner at Sushiya to celebrate an anniversary. I was missing the sushi from back home (NY) so much that it had become necessity to get some. Sushiya is very small, only a few tables and when we arrived there were only two tables empty and both had little reserved cards on them. The waitress came up to us, looked at her watch and said that if we could eat in less than an hour and a half we could have a table. Perfect. The restaurant is small, clean, and simple. On the wall is a little flat screen tv showing wacky japanese tv food programs that are so popular over there.

The menu is not particularly extensive with only 2 selections of the larger mixed rolls. One dragon and one rainbow. I wished they had more of these as these are some of my favourite choices when having sushi. We ordered some sake (we were celebrating you know) and shared a nigiri set, an order of eel, and went for the dragon roll as recommended by our waitress. We actually had more things on order but the chef must have said there was no way two people could eat that much and we took some stuff off. It was a good thing because there was no way we would have been able to get anything else down!

The miso soup that came with the set was nothing special. The eel was very good, no little bones which can be dissapointing and not overpowering. The nigiri set was ok. Fish to rice ratio was good. The fish was fresh, there is no doubt and all was neat and tidy as it should be. The dragon roll was presented well, shrimp tempura with cucumber in an inside out roll draped with avacado which could have been riper, with small dollops of slightly sweet japanese mayonaisse and flying fish roe. It was very nice, the shrimp had cooled a bit and would have been even tastier if it was given to us when the shrimp was still hot to contrast with some of the colder ingredients.

If you are craving sushi sushiya will sate your appetite but if you are looking for outrageous stuff I hope you know where to get it!

I went here with three friends last night and was impressed. I have not eaten all that much sushi in the past and I didn't last night either! I had chicken teriyaki with thin noodles. It was very tasty and very filling. My friends went for sushi and they were impressed too, although I don't think to 5* standard, but then that probably says more about their like of sushi generally, rather than this place in particular.

The restaurant is very friendly and very petite (if you can say that about a Japanese restaurant). As for the price, it seemed perfectly reasonable. There's nothing more I can add as I eat in Japanese restaurants so infrequently.

Sushiya is my fave place to eat in Edinburgh.

It is small and personal and you can see your fresh sushi being prepared in front of you.

The menu is quite extensive and has recently been updated - I recommend the dragon roll - beautifully presented and delicious. There are set menus as well which are excellent value for money.

I have dined at Sushiya several times both for lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed - the service can be a little slow at times but staff are attentive and pleasent.

Sushiya is excellent and by far the best Sushi restaurant in Edinburgh!

Sushiya, 19 Dalry Road, EH11 2BQ, Edinburgh

This is the best Sushi restaurant in Edinburgh, to be fair it is not exactly overwhelmed with competition challenging for the crown but even with a little more competition in the marketplace it would take some beating.

The surroundings are small without being cramped, I had heard a lot about the general atmosphere of Sushiya though on the evening we went there was neither any of the promised Japanese videos or pop music over the stereo, slightly dissapointing. We opted for a Sashimi and Nigri platter to share for starter, which was a great start, all fresh, good for fish v rice and plentiful for the price we paid for it. I accompanied this with a mug of green tea, which was rather large but little more than tepid, which soon turned to cold before the starter was out. For main I opted for the eel which was fantastically cooked, boneless and coated in a bbq sauce which was very tasty without overpowering the fish in any way, perfect. My dining partner had Ramen with chicken, the chicken was fairly average but the soup and noodles with it were very very very tasty and the whole dish was very plentiful and even with me helping we were unable to finish it off.

Add in 2 beers and we only just squeaked over £30 for the 2 of us, which is excellent value. Definitely one to go back to.

My fiance and I finally visited Sushiya for the first time last night and we were suitably impressed. Although the place is tiny it is obviously buzzing as no table was ever empty for long. Like so many others who have reviewed this restaurant I would heartily recommend the Dragon Roll - it looked and tasted amazing! For our 'main course' I had Teriyaki Chicken with Japanese rice and my fiance chose the Teriyaki Chicken with udon noodles. Both were much larger portions than expected, the rice and noodles were cooked prefectly and the teriyaki sauce was gloriously sticky and sweet. Gorgeous! I can't wait to go back and try the Rainbow Roll next time...

Well guys, I guess I went there after so many recommendations, and from people people who have been in Japan too, and that's why I was really unimpressed.

Now, I've never been a snob or anything about food but I lived in Japan for 5 years myself and I guarantee that this was the worst Japanese food I've ever tried, including entries such as Royal Host, etc. Hum, should have noticed that the chefs are Chinese before I seated.

Seriously, nothing personal but if this is the best place in Edinburgh, then no place is worth visiting at all. I tried sushi, sashimi, tempura, katsudon and ramen. I confess that the shape and colours were just fine. However, the taste was a real distant echo of what makes Japanese food so popular. The ramen was a disaster, although it is a Chinese invention.

As for the price, for appr. 10 pounds pp, even in Tokyo one can get 4 times more food than what Sushiya offers. And from the products used only the beer was imported.

Anyway, this was my personal opinion, others might advise otherwise.

Currently living in London but make a point of visit this fantastic little sushi restaurant any time I'm in Edinburgh. When I lived in Glasgow and worked in Edinburgh, I had been searching for a good sushi bar to meet friends after work and Sushiya could not be any better placed; right beside Haymarket just off the "commuter" route. Ideal for a quick sushi and sake before getting the last train.

Delicious selection of hot and cold dishes, sushi and sashimi with a few unusual options. Staff have always been attentative and spot on with recommendations for which dishes to select.

With its intimate set up it is definitely better for small groups but booking is a must a peak times as it is justifably popular.

It was a nice little place the visit. The sushi tasted fresh and atmosphere was pleasant. I've noticed since that it has become busier and the has a quite a funky and urban cliental these days.

My wife and I also ordered Raman - I lived off of various kinds in Japan and had to get a fix! The broth was OK (please note, the broth should be a great soup on it's own and not mearly a hot brine) and the veges were not Japanese at all. Overall, the taste was nice. I've had much worse.

Whilst this is probably the best Sushi I've tasted in the UK, it doesn't say much as I've not tried much in the UK, expecting the worst. Harsh? Maybe but if you enjoyed Sushiya (and they are quite OK) then you'd love to try the good stuff!!

My friends and I all love Sushiya and regularly meet up to get our sushi fix!

It is a small, but buzzing, little restaurant and the sushi is freshly prepared on the worktop. It's always busy so I'd recommend booking for any night. They also do takeaway which is great for a night in. I agree the service can be a little slow but they are very friendly and polite. Would recommend trying the edaname beans while contemplating your order....

Definitely the best sushi restaurant in Edinburgh... reckon would be a relaxed, funky choice for a first date...!

Leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to value for money. Even after spending close to 25 GBP I could still have another round of sashimi's and Maki.
