Mexican food worth skipping lunch for!
![]()
This no-nonsense colourful little restaurant on Thistle Street in the New Town does a great job of serving up a range of tasty Mexican dishes. We ate on a Wednesday night and as you might expect, the restaurant was fairly quiet. As soon as we were seated we were presented with a bowl of spicy popcorn. A nice touch, but not the culinary highlight so don't get carried away and fill up on it! As it was a warm evening and it was a Mexican restaurant we ordered a couple of Iced Margaritas. Our friendly waiter brought us a large pitcher. Rather than point out the mistake we looked at each other and shrugged. It would save us ordering more later.
To start I had a Chile Rellenos and my dining partner Chorizo Quesedilla. I was worried about the stuffed chiles being too hot but they were green and just right for me. A tasty starter and a good sized portion. The Chorizo Quesidilla was also nice but didn't get finished - it could quite feasibly have passed as a main course in other restaurants!
For mains we had Chimichangas and Flaming Fajitas. My fajitas were super tasty and served with a mountain of the usual accompaniments and salad. Unfortunately there were only 3 tortillas. This wasn't a problem for me as I'd already had a starter and was struggling to finish my food as it was. But if I'd skipped the starter I probably would have had to ask the waiter for more tortillas (and the service was good so I'm sure that wouldn't have been an issue). The Chimichangas didn't quite get finished either, not because it lacked flavour or anything - there was just so much of it!
We certainly didn't need to eat any more after we both failed to finish our main courses, but there's always room for a bit of dessert, right? We shared banoffee pie and it hit the spot. Nothing fancy, but that's not this restaurant's style.
The damage? A shade over £40, which, considering the large pitcher of Margarita and 2.5 courses each, has got to be good value. So, if you need a good feed, get yourself to Tex Mex II - but make sure you're really hungry to make the most of it!

This restaurant is my local and it's great!
It is quite new and I went with a friend a couple of weeks ago. It has an interesting interior of purple and green but do not let this put you off: the staff are really friendly and it has a great atmosphere.
I had fajitas and they were delicious. There was a great varied selection of Mexican food on the menu. I will definitely return and I highly recommend this restaurant to all.

3 of us stopped in here after some drinks on a Friday night. We stumbled in quite late without booking with the sole intention to get some food inside us before continuing boozing. It's a great little place and I'm looking forward to going back sometime to enjoy it when I'm sober.
From what I can remember, the food was great (nice and spicy - I had a pork dish - something Colorado) and the staff very friendly.

A group of us booked a table at this cute, little, colourful restaurant on Thistle st one Saturday evening. The food was lovely and there was a great choice of mexican dishes. Unfortunately the waitresses didn't smile and looked extremely bored of their duties, and made us aware that they needed our table back for another sitting at least three times during the meal!
So in conclusion a brilliant restaurant but shame about the waiting staff!

I gave it five stars because it reminded me of home. Have been living in Edinburgh for four years and this is the only mexican left that I love. The Yacht Club on Hanover Street was the other but sadly it is closed as the owner has died.

I agree with Jake, the best Mexican was the Tijuana Yacht Club until it sadly closed. Tex Mex is the next best thing! Very small but large portions, very nice for a romantic meal... according to my other half!

I realize this will offend, but have any the reviewers lived or even visited Southern California, Texas or Mexico? I have been horribly disappointed by the lack of understanding of 'Tex Mex' and Mexican cuisine since arriving in Edinburgh 6 years ago (yes, I am a native Southern Californian who has spent a lot of time south of the border). I desperately wanted Tex Mex II to deliver delicious, authentic Tex Mex fair but could barely overcome my disgust at the inclusion of pink peppercorns (PINK PEPPERCORNS?!) in my Suisa Enchiladas. Unfortunately, the pink peppercorns seemed to appear everywhere for no other reason than to appease the chef's silly indulgence. Additionally, in an attempt to eat beyond the peppercorns, I still couldn't find anything representative of the cuisine I grew up eating and truly love - nothing but the heavy, stodgy 'Mexican' cuisine that seems to sadly afflict this wonderful nation. On a positive note, the staff were fantastic and I did like the casual and friendly atmosphere. More than happy to schedule some cooking lessons with the chef.

This is a great wee restaurant in a cute little back street. The decor is not luxurious, but the food makes up for this and the portions are a good size, which is important to me. They have a great selection, including enough dishes for veggies and the staff are always friendly. try it! J.
