The Basement, 10a-12a Broughton Street, EH1 3RH, Edinburgh

I went here the other night with my partner after a jaunt of shopping in town. I chose this place after a recommendation of good cheap food. It was delivered!

When I arrived it was heaving with patrons and this was a Thursday night. Obviously a popular place with the younguns! We were lucky to get a seat in the way way back of the place, usually a restaurant location that I shy from as it always out of sight out of mind but to my surprise we were not forgotten!

We shared a starter of mussels. The sauce was definitely Thai inspired with chili and lemon, yum!

I had the duck confit with cranberry relish and my partner ordered the chicken salad. The texture of the duck was fantastic, falling off the bone and moist. The legs were on a bed of creamy savoy and the combo was lovely with the relish. The only problem was the whole thing was too too salty! And that is strange coming from me as I love salty food. My partner's dish did not suffer from the salt as mine did. The chicken was well cooked and came with a fresh salad.

Very nice indeed. Definitely recommend for cheap (I think our total bill with beer came to 25 quid) good eats. The burritos looked good so maybe will go Mexican next time. Usually I feel the need to shun places that hop too much around the globe but the basement is safe.

The Basement, 10a-12a Broughton Street, EH1 3RH, Edinburgh

I visited the basement on a Friday for some end of week drinks with colleagues. We got there just in time to get a seat (about 5.30) and after we got in it got gradually busier with folks standing. I had previously visited this bar on numerous Friday and Saturday nights for just drinks but not eaten there.

The menu is quite interesting with what seems to be a mix of Mexican and Mediterranean style dishes, all at very reasonable prices (£5 to £10). I had roasted lamb with sun-dried tomato humus. The lamb was a little bit dry and tough (possibly pre-cooked then reheated, the food was served very soon after ordering) but this disappointment of this was made up for by the accompaniment of some chorizo mash - very tasty. My mates also enjoyed their dishes.

I went here for the first time two nights ago and was pleasantly suprised. The food is cheap (around £6/£7) for a home-cooked main course of a considerable portion! It is mexican-themed but there is a good choice of traditional cuisine also. Only bad points are that the lighting is bad and that it seems compulsory for staff to wear a ridiculous amount of body piercings...

I go here regurlarly for lunch and have never had a bad meal. The food is all freshly cooked and the burittos are to die for. Service can at times be a bit slow but you always know what you are getting is freshly cooked and good quality. Their lunchtime 2 courses for £7.50 is a great deal.

The Basement has a great lunchtime deal. Yesterday I had a tomato and red pepper soup. Lovely and spicy with generous chunks of fresh bread. This was followed by a beautiful ribeye steak, served with sauteed potatoes and a slab of garlic butter.

Brilliantly done and at £7.50 for 2 courses, fantastic value.

Very friendly service too.

Ah the chimichangas! yum yum! Great feed for the price! It's downstairs so the place is a little dark which is more evident in the bar area when you are eating. Quite popular with students and very chilled out. The main restaurant area is nice enough as well (as long as you are not sat right beside the kitchen, ask when booking if you do). Typical mexican affair in terms of main dishes. I think probably more for a good lunch rather than somewhere to dine out but great value and great location.

I am a regular visitor to The Basement and always take visitors to it because of its excellent food at fantastic prices. The menu has been the same for a while, but the quality and portion of the food is excellent and cheap! They also have an excellent selection of Beers on tap. The Rump and Merlot pie is a great signature dish and the Banoffee pie is to die for. The staff are really friendly too.

I had the chilli con carne and it was like eating plastic. I'm sure I heard the sound of the microwave just before it came to the table.
