My local pub and a great one at that. From a drinking point of view it has a good selection of beers, along with an ever changing cask ale selection, always good in my book, every time you go in there is something different. The food is extensive, varied and reasonably priced in selection, both from the menu or the ever changing specials. Starters/bar snacks range from the likes of squid, garlicy prawns, soup or just a good old bowl of chunky chips to have with your beer. Mains are varied with all the pub favourites with a twist... lamb burgers in pitta bread, fancy bangers and mash, lime and coriander mayo with your fish and chips. There is also a good selection of steaks and more restaurant type dishes, but served in a friendly pub environment. A special shout out also has to go to the fantastic olives, marinated in house and fantastically tasty!

Really excellent food at reasonable prices. Great wine selection, too. A neighbourhood gem.

Interesting menu which regularly changes, we ate because we were locked out of our house and the locksmith turned up when the food did so not the best circumstances to eat out in. However, definitely one I'd try again. The plate was a bit sparse and could have done with more vegetables but it's nicely decorated place and I'd go back again.

We used to live on Slateford Road and spent many a happy night on the beer in The Sample Room. I was interested to see what it was like now but was bitterly disappointed. Firstly I ordered a pint of the guest ale "Quaff" which was so cloudy it was undrinkable. The replacement pint of Horizon was not much better - er, the horizon must have been quite near that day. The staff were very pleasant but didn't seem to have the necessary skill to keep decent beer. A straw poll round the room showed that nobody was drinking real ale - a sorry tale on the premises that used to be the flagship for the fine Caledonian Brewery. Sad to report the food was no better - my roast beef was tough and served with roast potatoes that would have given you a sore one if fired out a catapult. My pal's risotto was bland, colourless and overpriced. We left and went to Diggers to wash our mouths out - a much more pleasant experience.
