Visited this restaurant on Victoria Street at the weekend to take advantage of The Times' "Dine with Wine" offer. 2 courses and a glass of wine for a tenner. Turns out that their standard lunch deal is 2 courses for £10, so we were getting the glass of wine for free. Which is fine, of course!
We weren't really expecting much for a cheap lunch deal, but it turned out that the food was excellent. Two of us opted for the pork belly main course, with the other having coq au vin. First impressions of the pork dish weren't great - it looked a bit dry, with only the slightest drizzle of sauce. But the meat was actually fantastically moist and it was a great dish overall. The coq au vin was a predictably safe and tasty choice.
Two of us had starters, the other dessert. They were all good too. Nothing particularly worthy of comment. Service was good and the restaurant is tastefully done out. All in all, certainly can't complain at £30 for 2 courses and wine for 3 people!
One thing to note - although the restaurant was largely empty on the Saturday lunchtime we visited, some people were turned away at about 1.55pm and told that lunch service was finished. So I'd recommend you book to avoid disappointment, even at quiet times.

I have been to the Grainstore for both lunch and dinner and both times I thought the food and service was excellent. Lunch is very reasonable as they do two courses for £9.95 and they also have an a la carte menu for the evening with two main courses for £20. I agree with James as the service is excellent - the waiters and waitresses are both friendly and efficient. The only down side, in my opinion, was the lack of choice on the dessert menu. If they had a more appetising and more varied dessert menu I would have been tempted to give this restaurant five stars!

What a place, tucked into the vaults of Victoria Street, this is one of those magical, candlelit restaurants that you just happen upon.
Go there, it is amazing, and the service is excellent too - once I asked for a kind of hybrid of two dishes and they suggested a slightly different mix (still off the menu) that was delicious. Now that is the kind of restaurant that deserves all your custom.

Went here a couple of years ago on the recommendation of a friend - and the food was fantastic.
The menu doesn't offer a huge choice and the options for vegetarians are quite limited - probably best if you like your meat. What is on the menu is some top quality Scottish produce and it's beautifully prepared.
Service was friendly and attentive without being annoying.
Don't be put off by the rather utilitarian entrance, once inside it's a different world - try and get a window seat so you can look down on the comings and going on Victoria street.

In contrast to the above reviews our experience of this restaurant was very disappointing. Initially, we were informed that half the starters and mains were off (at 8:00pm on a Sunday night). We ordered from the remaining, and most of the food was ok, though undistinguished. The service was so poor that we didn't tip (we always tip). Worst feature by far was the cheese - this was atrocious, which is quite a feat for a restaurant directly above I. J. Mellis. It had clearly sat out for a long, long time. On arrival we noticed the table next door arguing with the waiter, by the time we left we could see why.
