This place is close to my work but the experience I had trying to get a drink the other night led me to believe that it's not near as convenient as its location. It took ages to get drinks. Not because the bar was crowded and not because of lack of staff - because none of the staff were capable of making a drink!

The first attempt fell to the wayside when the barman disappeared and never passed on the order to someone else. When I came to my senses that the guy had completely abandoned me I re-ordered my drink, a bramble berry number, from someone behind the bar who did not feel confident enough to make it (one of only a few cocktails on the menu) only to pass it on to someone else.

I finally did get my drink. It was ok, not worth the wait though.

I ordered food off their bar snacks menu. Whitebait. Nicely presented but served with a small dish of coarse salt which was too crunchy when stuck on the little fish and would have been much better served with finer sea salt.

I also had lunch there the other day. They have these open faced sandwiches, hard to eat but ok. I had the tuna which I thought would have been just seared on the outside and raw in the middle and was disappointed when it arrived cooked all the way through.

An ok place for a drink if you are going to order something easy to pour, wine or beer only! Bar snacks are good, but you might want to rethink lunch.

If you can be bothered to hike down to Leith harbour then the Granary is definitely worth visiting for dinner. It is has a very relaxing, intimate atmosphere with very comfortable seats. The food is good with generous portions and the prices are reasonable - approximately £10 a main course. The beef was great! Definitely worth a visit.

This place is a gem in Leith.

The place is beautiful with a great atmosphere (look at pics on their website) and warm and friendly service.

6 of us (workmates) went there for lunch. We had Angus steak sandwich, meat was brilliant and bread exceptional, leek and chicken pie was the best ever and the fish and chips in IPA batter wonderful too. My Scottish workmate even said that this was the best she ever had!

Prices were £8 average and the portions massive.

We'll go again and again.

After having an OK lunch here some time ago, I ended up back for dinner. First of all, there seemed to be incredible confusion in setting up the reservation over the phone (wherein I repeated the time I desired several times and the person on the other end didn't seem to remember what I had said a few seconds earlier). On to the food: I had one of the more expensive mains, and while the meat was cooked perfectly, the rest of the dish ranged from lukewarm to cool in temperature, which was a bit disappointing. Finally our bill (with debit cards stacked on top) sat there and we waited, and waited, and waited... we ended up walking the bill up to the bar. Not sure I'll rush back to this place, I'm afraid.

I frequent this bar often but for drinks only. Generally the food is abysmal. I have had a Sunday breakfast here which was at best passable but where do they get those sausages from?? The Venison one I had smelt of old sock. After a mouthful I left the rest. The manager came across and asked why I had not eaten it! I gave him my opinion...

Lunches are of the basically bad variety. Your typical pub grub but made so badly that its impossible to say a good word. Great place for a drink. I love the atmosphere and can recall the old days of this venue when it used to be called The Trading Post in the nineties. The food served was better then. Believe me. The one and half stars are for the decor and atmosphere only.

I went a week ago with a friend for lunch. We sat in the window. She ordered the haggis, neeps and tatties from the starters and I had the aubergine cous cous. The HNT came stylishly served in a tower and looked a small portion but my friend couldn't finish it and we decided the tower was deceptive. My cous cous came without its almonds and it needed either more veg or some more seasonings as it was just ok. I liked the service as they were attentive but left us in peace otherwise.

Previously when I've been I've had brunch with large portions of tasty food so reckon this place is generally good.

The Granary used to be amazing - wonderful food, impeccable service and a great atmosphere. It seemed to go rapidly downhill after a year or so but is definitely on the up again.

The staff seem to know what they are doing once more, and the food is getting better. They often have very reasonable set menus, too.

Very disappointed with the food we purchased. The meal took ages to prepare even though we were the only customers in the restaurant at the time!

Food unsatisfactory, chips raw and overdone and cold. Fish in batter had too much fat on it.

When we were asked to pay, the waiter informed us that they would not accept credit cards. So I had to go a ten minute walk to the cash point. Thank goodness it was open.

Don't worry... we won't be back. For my colleagues working for Scottish Government... TRY SOMEWHERE ELSE. Quality very unsatisfactory.

AWFUL, AWFUL, truly AWFUL. Unfortunately because it didn't seem like there was any managerial staff in the restaurant, it almost seems like it was a complete waste of time complaining about the BAD service because they just truly didn't care! The man who seems to be the head of staff, with the white shirt, and the bar man both had a giggle behind the bar as customers complain. Whilst paying for our meal, the barman asked 'Did you enjoy your meal?' - I think this a deliberate attempt to set us off in a big rant of how bad the food and service has been... he didn't even apologise and responded with 'this is my last day anyway, this is the usual service'...??? Who runs a business like this? Is this some kind of money laundering business? I can't possibly see how they can keep a restaurant in business with such bad service! What a waste of a good location, and space for such a bad business! G1 - sort this out! Loving your description on your wesbite - 'The Granary serves quality hearty food in comfortable homely setting down by the Leith docks. Experience food that will warm your cockles and leave a lasting impression on your tastebuds' - who did you actually employ to write this nonsense? Obviously someone who has never experienced eating in the restaurant! Made me laugh so hard! DO NOT EAT IN THIS PLACE - stupid smirk in the waiter and bar staff makes you just want to punch their silly little faces and knock some sense into them!

Went for dessert and coffee (!!!) and were not disappointed. The tablet and shortcake ice-cream is TO DIE FOR! The waiter was really friendly, typical of the good old Aussies...

I booked a lunch at the Granary through 5pm.co.uk on one of their set menus for myself and 7 other family members. The offer is certainly great value and most of us agreed that the food was of a good pub-grub standard, possibly with the exception of some of the vegetarian options which lacked imagination.

However the achingly slow service and general mis-communication between staff made the experience disappointing. As soon as we sat at our table I noticed that the menu we were offered wasn't the one advertised on the 5pm site and assumed that a mistake had been made. I asked the waitress, who reassured us that the menu was correct and that because we'd booked through 5pm we would be charged less than advertised. However, after ordering (a mere 20mins after arriving...) a different waiter (possibly the manager) informed us that a mistake had been made and that we'd need to order from a different menu. It didn't seem to make a difference that we had been told otherwise to start with. As far as he was concerned it was the second menu or nothing.

Not wanting to ruin a family day out we all re-ordered and waited a further 45mins for our starter. Meanwhile, we needed to remind another member of the waiting staff that we were supposed to get a complimentary Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic with our meal. After some confusion and another long wait the drinks did arrive.

In total the 3 course meal took 3 hours to serve which we didn't mind too much on the day but wouldn't have been ideal if we were in a hurry. Added to this, the head waiter/manger's 'can't do' and patronising attitude did put a cloud over the experience for me and I can't say I'll be in a rush to go back as a result. A real shame as it's a nice setting and the food for the most part is rather good.

I used to like the Granary but recently their service has gone more and more downhill so I won't be back! Food is okay if you can be bothered waiting on it. I was in at the weekend and was prepared to put up with the slow service but hadn't expected it to be quite as awful as it was. It took 15 minutes for someone to take our order. Another half an hour later our food still hadn't arrived (we only ordered soup and a sandwich which doesn't take long to make). When I asked the waiter how much longer it would be, his response was "You've had your food". When I assured him we hadn't I was flabbergasted by his response - "I'd swear you've had your food". I couldn't believe it! He was trying to accuse us of pulling a fast one on him! I explained I wasn't willing to wait any longer and was going to go elsewhere. They let us have our drinks for free but that was all they did to try to make it up to us. Slow service and rude staff do not make for a nice meal out!

Went in on a busy Friday night, had to wait a while for a table, but got seated and ordered at a reasonable speed. Food was ok, nothing special, wine was good and reasonably priced. Altogether a decent meal but nothing really stood out and excelled above anywhere else.
