This is a bit of a strange place. From the outside the building looks new and quite modern, however, inside it appears as though the decor has not been redone since whenever it opened (2002 apparently). Therefore, inside it looks a little bit run down and shabby. They also have a couple of fruit machines in one corner, which I feel also detracts from the ambience of pubs/bars.

After having been sat down and looking at the menus for a few minutes I decided that there must not be table service as the staff had not acknowledged our prescence. Upon ordering drinks at the bar I was informed that they do actually do table service.

I had a burger which was a tad disappointing. On the menu it was described as "8oz Aberdeen Angus Burger with a thick chutney relish", which sounds tasty. I cannot argue that the burger which arrived was not 8oz - it was pretty huge - however, its texture was too fine and it didn't really taste of anything apart from salt and, although it was there, the portion of relish was tiny and tasteless.

The Merlin also practices my current pet hate for pubs/bars - they appear to think that if they have fancy flat screen TVs dotted about the place they must use them so have Sky Sports News constantly running. Despite not being interested in watching I always find my gaze drawn to the screen.

I've eaten here twice and found it mediocre both times. Had burgers and some sort of chicken dippers and to be perfectly honest I've been half way through and wondered 'why am I here'. No not some sort of existensial conundrum - why am I not in a decent boozer with good grub instead of this location.

It's not such an awful place but there must be better options locally. The Morning Glory for example although I've never eaten there. Next time I will.

Not terrible but why pay for mediocrity.

PS - the pool table is always complicated/broken.

I have to disagree with the other reviewers.

I've eaten here twice and both times have enjoyed the food put in front of me and thought the price was reasonable (though it could be dropped ever so slightly) for the area.

Yes, the staff can be a bit slow at coming over to the table to offer service, but this has to be weighed up against the times in other restaurants when you get hounded by the staff every 2 mins asking would you like to order. Apart from the slowness, I've always thought the staff were thorough enough and very friendly.

A bit of mediocrity in a posh bit of the city.
