This is a bit of a strange place. From the outside the building looks new and quite modern, however, inside it appears as though the decor has not been redone since whenever it opened (2002 apparently). Therefore, inside it looks a little bit run down and shabby. They also have a couple of fruit machines in one corner, which I feel also detracts from the ambience of pubs/bars.

After having been sat down and looking at the menus for a few minutes I decided that there must not be table service as the staff had not acknowledged our prescence. Upon ordering drinks at the bar I was informed that they do actually do table service.

I had a burger which was a tad disappointing. On the menu it was described as "8oz Aberdeen Angus Burger with a thick chutney relish", which sounds tasty. I cannot argue that the burger which arrived was not 8oz - it was pretty huge - however, its texture was too fine and it didn't really taste of anything apart from salt and, although it was there, the portion of relish was tiny and tasteless.

The Merlin also practices my current pet hate for pubs/bars - they appear to think that if they have fancy flat screen TVs dotted about the place they must use them so have Sky Sports News constantly running. Despite not being interested in watching I always find my gaze drawn to the screen.

As a bar, the Merlin serves it's purpose, but that's all. A lot of people I know use it as a place to meet and relax after work, so it's often quite rowdy, but not in a bad way. I do find it distracting that I have yet to find an area in the place where you aren't looking at a television screen showing sport.

The food is definitely below-par. The menu offers the standard pub-grub and whilst it has aspirations to be a gastro-pub, it is severely let down by the quality and insipid presentation.

The staff are friendly enough, and there's a tabled area outside when it's sunny. I just feel that being in such a prime location in Morningside, it really should try an awful lot harder. But, then, it's always busy, so what do I know!

I've eaten here twice and found it mediocre both times. Had burgers and some sort of chicken dippers and to be perfectly honest I've been half way through and wondered 'why am I here'. No not some sort of existensial conundrum - why am I not in a decent boozer with good grub instead of this location.

It's not such an awful place but there must be better options locally. The Morning Glory for example although I've never eaten there. Next time I will.

Not terrible but why pay for mediocrity.

PS - the pool table is always complicated/broken.

Rubbish. If I am not ill this evening I will be surprised. Service took ages although we were told we would have to wait 25 mins to get our food. Not in a rush so thought that would be fine, we'll order starter in meantime. Ordered wedges with cheese - basically couple of wedges microwaved with cheese in bowl... £4 please. I ordered sausage and mash (pretty basic) and other half ordered rump steak. Basically my sausages were pretty much raw upon serving and mash also clearly been microwaved - refused to pay for that dish and did not bother ordering anything else. Rump steak was cooked but again, pretty poor... better places near by!

I have to disagree with the other reviewers.

I've eaten here twice and both times have enjoyed the food put in front of me and thought the price was reasonable (though it could be dropped ever so slightly) for the area.

Yes, the staff can be a bit slow at coming over to the table to offer service, but this has to be weighed up against the times in other restaurants when you get hounded by the staff every 2 mins asking would you like to order. Apart from the slowness, I've always thought the staff were thorough enough and very friendly.

We go to the Merlin for lunch etc. and have found the food to be excellent and prices very reasonable.

My daughter had her 21st birthday party upstairs and the staff could not have been more helpful.

I would, without hesitation, recommend the Merlin to anyone.

The bar area has been done up and looks lovely so why can't they sort out the poor relation of a function suite upstairs! it looks shabby to say the least and in need of some TLC to its decor, carpets and soft furnishings. Have been to quite a few good functions up there over the years but it just never seems to get a makeover.

It's high time it had one so come on owners pull your finger out and do something!

Just got back from a lunch with a friend, How hard is it to put together a fish and chips x2. 40 minute wait. And then the food was cold...

Staff were nice, but the chefs and management need to roll up their sleeves. I will never be back.

Horrendous service from the 'manager'. No patience, unhelpful, incredibly rude and just a total idiot really. Seemed to take offence at our group asking what drinks are available with the lunch deal and then proceeded to refuse service to a 28 year old man because he didn't have ID. Was so rude and dismissive about it we all cancelled our orders and left. We were served food and drinks down the road with a smile.

Completely shocked at the sheer level of terrible service. We will never be going back. Very upset as I have been to the Merlin frequently before and only ever received lovely service, but then I have never been served by this idiot before.

Place good for large gatherings of people cause there is space and for people who are bored cause they can watch TV, play pool, play at the machines or watch out the window or take part in quizzes while sipping on cool or hot drinks.

Now, if you don't want to watch TV, it's difficult not to, to be fair. The TV screens are really in your face wherever you sit, which prevents quality chatting when you're catching up with friends, whether your friends are boring or really interesting it doesn't change a thing!

The food is not extraordinary - although the prices are not excessive either. I think the Merlin would benefit from simplifying the menu radically but getting the basics right (burgers, gravies, common!). Trendy and cheap is an annoying compromise.

Trying to do everything, nothing is done well.

But I do think the Merlin is a convenient place for Morningside people and I'll keep going when I am looking for conveniency...

And the staff has always been fine. No extra mile, but fine.

Food was very good. My only complaint is it took a very long time to be Served . I thought they had gone out with a fishing rod to catch a fish.

Our table seemed to have two waitresses as though they didn't know who was serving which tables, and the food was... well, I could have produced much better myself. We ate it because we were hungry and confusingly the guy taking our money as we paid up agreed with us that the food we'd had was a 'version' of a croque monsieur' and didn't know how to respond to us not enjoying our food. No one came back after serving the food to check that it was alright, and we saw a table of 6 all staring at their plates - not starting to eat! We refused to take the flyers for 2 for 1 meals to come back, as even though the bartender tried to convince us that 'it's a really good deal' I can't think of a reason to eat there again. A drink maybe but that's all!

It's definitely time to re-visit, as The Merlin has had a facelift and it looks really lovely inside! There seems to be more emphasis on food this time round with plenty tables of various sizes. Most noticeable was the very helpful and friendly service. Food was excellent standard pub food and I will definitely be going back.
