Another seafood spot and we've been here for a birthday dinner. Not the cheapest but herself really enjoyed the surf'n'turf and while I had seafood medley, it was pretty good but not excellent. On the whole we enjoyed it more than the Mussell inn but I think I've been a bit unlucky with my choice of mains in this place and its competition (the Mussell Inn). If anything the food was nicer here but there was a lot less atmosphere. Not bad.
Good service, we paid £70 for two of us and that was having pretty much everything - 3 courses, wine/beer and coffee.
I'd go again.

I have eaten here on three mid-week occasions and enjoyed each one. The restaurant is very cosy and reminded me of what someone's house would feel like if they opened it to the public and served food. I must confess that I have not yet tried the mussels opting for soup, steak and various other seafood dishes. The quality of the food is high and would suit a range of palattes as they offer healthy through to more luxurious dishes (you can choose what your chips are fried in for instance - when I went every boy had beef dripping every girl sunflower oil!) the staff are very welcoming and friendly and provide you with bread and butter and a drink with great alacrity. The price of this establishment is the only thing preventing me from giving it four stars as I seem to remember it was quite expensive (£15ish for main course) - perhaps a product of it's situation in the touristy Grassmarket - although having said that I would definitely go back.

The pots of mussels are beautifully fresh and the seafood pasta is on the generous side and bursting with flavour. They also have a rather nifty deal that if you buy two glasses of wine they give you the rest of the bottle free - fantastic for a boozy lunch (which is what we had!). Good value and good choices, although why anyone would sidestep the plump, juicy mussels that the place is reknowned for is beyond me.
We recently went back to the Mussel & Steak Bar for dinner to mark the end of our holiday and again the service was superb. The food was fantastic: my other half opted for the seafood platter and was amazed by the huge dish placed in front of him. He even ate oysters, a first for him. I chickened out, lol! It was the end of the Edinburgh Festival so, as expected, the place was packed and we did have to wait longer than usual but it was well worth it. The waitresses were as attentive as possible but it was very busy: the couple next to us got their meal free after the girl's second choice was unavailable due to the excessive demand. A nice touch, I thought.
All in all I'd heartily recommend this restaurant. :)

Four of us went during the festival and it was terrific - starters were ok but the main course was spot on. Only downside one of the staff not very pleasant (Aussie guy) but I would go back.
